Five of the most annoying dress codes, decoded!

"Come As You Are"

I'm all for people getting creative with their party décor, but not so much with their dress code description. (Unless, you know, it's a theme party.) Island fancy, mountain chic, dress for the summer solstice (?!): these are all real dress decrees I've been given and all ones that immediately sent me into Gchat-polling madness to figure out what the host was trying to tell me.

Here's what I discovered about six of the most common and confusing dress codes in the process—and the best way to tackle each of them.

"Come As You Are" (Shown at top)

Really? Come in the moth-eaten t-shirt and old boxer shorts I've been wearing to watch Scandal? Didn't think so. I wish they just said "Hey people, jeans are fine" instead. That's how I usually approach it, then add a cozy button-down and flats. And then maybe a cool bag that makes me seem like I tried just a little bit.

Slim jeans, $49.99, mango.com; "Beeman" loafers, $395, Rag & Bone, shopbop.com; perfect shirt in crosshatch linen, $88, jcrew.com; ethnic clutch bag, $89.90, zara.com .

Denim & Diamonds

"Denim & Diamonds"

If this were a legit excuse to go buy myself some diamonds, I would love it. But on my budget it morphs into something more like "denim & something shiny."  In that case I'm all about some jewelry that's a little unexpected, like these earrings, which add a punch of color in with that bling. (And a denim skirt, which is slightly less predictable than jeans.)

Dark wash rip denim mini skirt, $39, dorothyperkins.com; orange ds earrings, $412, Shourouk, charmandchain.com; Heidi eyelet top, $138, Ella Moss, shopbop.com; "Toni" slim sandals, $208, shopbop.com .

Dressy Resort / Island Formal

"Dressy Resort" / "Island Formal"

Beach weddings! They love this dress code. Nail it by wearing a free-flowing maxi dress that flows a bit in the breeze and feels very "I'm on vacation."  Then add flat sandals that let you walk in the sand/boardwalk/beach grass without having to take them off.

Long printed dress, $90, zara.com; beaded tassel earrings, $55, Isabel Marant, netaporter.com; bangle set, $111, Kelly Wearstler, shopbop.com; embellished sandals, $90, topshop.com .

Festive / Dress to Impress

"Festive"/ "Dress to Impress"

Everytime I see this , I think , "What? Do you think I normally dress to not impress?" But I guess they mean to step it up a notch, in the sort of high-voltage stuff that seems very New Year's Eve to me: full skirts, sequins, mega-heels, major makeup.

Short-sleeve sequin dress, $140, Ali Ro, amazon.com; false eyelashes, $15, Illamasqua, sephora.com; navy party skirt, $195, skotapparel.com; lace court shoe, $49.90, zara.com

Casual Chic

"Casual Chic"

This one should just say "casual but not really, haha" or "casual but not jeans-casual, eww." It means you've got to step it up a teeny bit with proper pants and a blouse, or maybe a sundress and sandals. (Add red lipstick if you're worried you're on the borderline. It always makes everything look a level more polished.)

Polka dot blouse, $198, J.Crew, netaporter.com; cuvee chic lipstick, $34, bite beauty, sephora.com; trousers with zips on waist, $ 59.90, zara.com; leather ballerinas, $79.99, mango.com

    • Trump's Russia scandal takes an unexpected turn

On Friday afternoon, FBI Director James Comey delivered a classified, hour-long briefing to the Senate Intelligence Committee on the Russia scandal, and soon after, the Senate Intelligence Committee sent “formal requests to more than a dozen organizations, agencies and individuals, asking them to preserve all materials related to the committee’s investigation” into the controversy. We don’t know much about how the briefing went – committee members were tight-lipped following Comey’s presentation – though Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) tweeted late Friday that he’s “now very confident” that the committee will conduct “thorough bipartisan investigation” into Russia’s “interference and influence.” Reading

(CNN)Melania Trump is beginning to forge her own path as America's first lady, assembling a team of aides and advisers. But the name of one longtime confidante, and perhaps her most trusted friend, won't be announced with a news release or statement or a new title: her sister, Ines Knauss. Knauss, Trump's older sister, lives just blocks from Trump Tower in the Trump Park Avenue property, public records confirm. She was Trump's maid of honor at her 2005 Palm Beach wedding, People magazine reported at the time. And the first lady called Knauss "an incredible woman and a friend" in her July speech at the Republican National Convention. And the sister of the famously private Slovenian-born first

We knew The Rock would be appearing at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California to do something for the crowd before Monday Night Raw went on the air this evening, because he told us. And he did just that, hyping up the crowd while letting them know to stick around after the show to be a part of filming a movie he’s working on. You knew they would run an angle, though. Sure enough, after he was done doing his thing, Vince McMahon showed up to fire him (the first video cuts off right as the firing is happening, the second is right after it happened): Hopefully WWE releases a better video later. We’ll pass it along if they do.

    • One month of Trump: What voters think – and why that matters

After 30 days in office President Trump has done one thing for sure: He’s polarized American voters more than any US chief executive of the last 30 years. Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents loathe his performance, per approval polls. This is a reminder that most of the people who put Trump in office are content to wait and see how his policies develop.

    • All Of Emma Watson’s Looks From The Beauty And The Beast Press Tour (3 photos)

It’s only T minus 25 days until we get to watch Emma Watson dazzle us on the big screen as Belle in Disney’s new adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. We’ve already gotten sneak peeks of how the actress looks wearing that iconic yellow dress and—allegedly—her rose-covered fairy tale wedding gown, and while we’re admittedly obsessed with the epic costume design in the film, we’re equally excited about the prospect of seeing Watson’s personal style throughout the movie’s press tour. Given the fact that she’s been a muse for major designers and is regularly at the top of best-dressed lists for awards shows and other red carpet events, we know she’s going to serve us some seriously good looks. That said, we’re keeping track of all Emma’s fashions leading up to the film’s release on March 17th, so check back often to see her latest looks as well as what designers she’s wearing.
