Five of the most annoying dress codes, decoded!

"Come As You Are"

I'm all for people getting creative with their party décor, but not so much with their dress code description. (Unless, you know, it's a theme party.) Island fancy, mountain chic, dress for the summer solstice (?!): these are all real dress decrees I've been given and all ones that immediately sent me into Gchat-polling madness to figure out what the host was trying to tell me.

Here's what I discovered about six of the most common and confusing dress codes in the process—and the best way to tackle each of them.

"Come As You Are" (Shown at top)

Really? Come in the moth-eaten t-shirt and old boxer shorts I've been wearing to watch Scandal? Didn't think so. I wish they just said "Hey people, jeans are fine" instead. That's how I usually approach it, then add a cozy button-down and flats. And then maybe a cool bag that makes me seem like I tried just a little bit.

Slim jeans, $49.99, mango.com; "Beeman" loafers, $395, Rag & Bone, shopbop.com; perfect shirt in crosshatch linen, $88, jcrew.com; ethnic clutch bag, $89.90, zara.com .

Denim & Diamonds

"Denim & Diamonds"

If this were a legit excuse to go buy myself some diamonds, I would love it. But on my budget it morphs into something more like "denim & something shiny."  In that case I'm all about some jewelry that's a little unexpected, like these earrings, which add a punch of color in with that bling. (And a denim skirt, which is slightly less predictable than jeans.)

Dark wash rip denim mini skirt, $39, dorothyperkins.com; orange ds earrings, $412, Shourouk, charmandchain.com; Heidi eyelet top, $138, Ella Moss, shopbop.com; "Toni" slim sandals, $208, shopbop.com .

Dressy Resort / Island Formal

"Dressy Resort" / "Island Formal"

Beach weddings! They love this dress code. Nail it by wearing a free-flowing maxi dress that flows a bit in the breeze and feels very "I'm on vacation."  Then add flat sandals that let you walk in the sand/boardwalk/beach grass without having to take them off.

Long printed dress, $90, zara.com; beaded tassel earrings, $55, Isabel Marant, netaporter.com; bangle set, $111, Kelly Wearstler, shopbop.com; embellished sandals, $90, topshop.com .

Festive / Dress to Impress

"Festive"/ "Dress to Impress"

Everytime I see this , I think , "What? Do you think I normally dress to not impress?" But I guess they mean to step it up a notch, in the sort of high-voltage stuff that seems very New Year's Eve to me: full skirts, sequins, mega-heels, major makeup.

Short-sleeve sequin dress, $140, Ali Ro, amazon.com; false eyelashes, $15, Illamasqua, sephora.com; navy party skirt, $195, skotapparel.com; lace court shoe, $49.90, zara.com

Casual Chic

"Casual Chic"

This one should just say "casual but not really, haha" or "casual but not jeans-casual, eww." It means you've got to step it up a teeny bit with proper pants and a blouse, or maybe a sundress and sandals. (Add red lipstick if you're worried you're on the borderline. It always makes everything look a level more polished.)

Polka dot blouse, $198, J.Crew, netaporter.com; cuvee chic lipstick, $34, bite beauty, sephora.com; trousers with zips on waist, $ 59.90, zara.com; leather ballerinas, $79.99, mango.com

The execution of Kenneth Williams in the US state of Arkansas on Thursday (27 April) has stirred a controversy after his lawyers called for an inquiry alleging that the lethal injection procedure was "horrifying". Media persons who witnessed the procedure said that the convicted murderer coughed, trembled, lurched and jerked about 15 times after he received the first of three lethal injections. Williams' last words were "I humbly extend my apologies to those families I have senselessly wronged".

    • Black-eyed mugshot of Lancaster County suspect gets national attention, disbelief

A police mug shot taken in Lancaster County, S.C., is drawing attention across the country for what appears to be a blond woman with black eyes. The mug shot is of 24-year-old Morgan Joyce Varn, who faces charges of kidnapping, armed robbery and property damage in Lancaster County. She remained in the Lancaster County jail Friday without bond. It is the kind of case that typically doesn’t get attention beyond county lines, but the story was being picked up across the nation Friday due to Varn’s striking image: Full head of blond hair, pale forehead covered in tattoos, and the whites of her eyes appearing to be black and reflective like glass. Social media commenters quickly picked up on the photo,

    • Antarctica Blood Falls mystery solved? Find out the source of the red water

The source of Antarctica's gruesome looking Blood Falls has finally been discovered putting an end to the mystery of where the red water came from. Researchers from the University of Alaska Fairbanks have now concluded that the blood resembling liquid is iron-rich brine that comes from a more than million-year-old lake trapped beneath the Taylor Glacier. It is the same process that gives iron a dark red colour when it rusts.

    • North Korea test-fires ballistic missile in defiance of world pressure

By Jack Kim and Ju-min Park SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile on Saturday shortly after U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned that failure to curb Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programs could lead to "catastrophic consequences". U.S. and South Korean officials said the test, from an area north of the North Korean capital, appeared to have failed, in what would be the North's fourth straight unsuccessful missile test since March. The test came as the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier group arrived in waters near the Korean peninsula, where it began exercises with the South Korean navy on Saturday, about 12 hours after the failed launch, a South Korean navy official said.

    • Mom's alone, and the kids don't come around

Dear Amy: I have three grown children. They are all gainfully employed, with good educations and good relationships. I feel we have a good relationship, and when we are together, we seem to have fun. My husband travels internationally and is gone frequently. Never once has it ever occurred to any of my children (who live an hour or less away) to call me and ask me to go out to grab a bite to eat or even to visit. They know I am here alone. They are perfectly happy to let me come to them and treat them to a meal, but they never reciprocate. I am 62 and retired. I have activities and friends, but my family is important to me. I was always involved in all my children's activities. I worked part

    • No 'Star Wars' game has ever looked this real

In the last major "Star Wars" game, "Battlefront," you're given a sandbox of "Star Wars" characters and worlds to play in. It's very pretty — one of the best-looking games on any system — but doesn't hold a candle to what one intrepid gamer turned it into.  Behold: No, that isn't a still from "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" — that's what happens when you apply a "mod" (modification) to "Star Wars Battlefront" on PC. And no, you can't do this to the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 versions, sadly; modding games requires a level of access to the guts of a game that you simply can't access on consoles. All that aside: Whoa, right?

    • Hard times for Whole Foods: 'People say it's for pretentious people. I can see why'

Whole Foods’ share price has dropped by almost half since October 2013. Lunchtime customers at Whole Foods in Manhattan’s Union Square had little trouble expressing the shortcomings that have led the once high-flying, organic-focused retailer to become linked with a takeover. “I love the sushi, but I wouldn’t shop here except maybe for a special ingredient,” said Argentinian software designer Benjamin Vinas.
