Five of the most annoying dress codes, decoded!

I'm all for people getting creative with their party décor, but not so much with their dress code description. (Unless, you know, it's a theme party.) Island fancy, mountain chic, dress for the summer solstice (?!): these are all real dress decrees I've been given and all ones that immediately sent me into Gchat-polling madness to figure out what the host was trying to tell me.

Here's what I discovered about six of the most common and confusing dress codes in the process—and the best way to tackle each of them.

"Come As You Are" (Shown at top)

Really? Come in the moth-eaten t-shirt and old boxer shorts I've been wearing to watch Scandal? Didn't think so. I wish they just said "Hey people, jeans are fine" instead. That's how I usually approach it, then add a cozy button-down and flats. And then maybe a cool bag that makes me seem like I tried just a little bit.

Slim jeans, $49.99,; "Beeman" loafers, $395, Rag & Bone,; perfect shirt in crosshatch linen, $88,; ethnic clutch bag, $89.90, .

Denim & Diamonds

"Denim & Diamonds"

If this were a legit excuse to go buy myself some diamonds, I would love it. But on my budget it morphs into something more like "denim & something shiny."  In that case I'm all about some jewelry that's a little unexpected, like these earrings, which add a punch of color in with that bling. (And a denim skirt, which is slightly less predictable than jeans.)

Dark wash rip denim mini skirt, $39,; orange ds earrings, $412, Shourouk,; Heidi eyelet top, $138, Ella Moss,; "Toni" slim sandals, $208, .

Dressy Resort / Island Formal

"Dressy Resort" / "Island Formal"

Beach weddings! They love this dress code. Nail it by wearing a free-flowing maxi dress that flows a bit in the breeze and feels very "I'm on vacation."  Then add flat sandals that let you walk in the sand/boardwalk/beach grass without having to take them off.

Long printed dress, $90,; beaded tassel earrings, $55, Isabel Marant,; bangle set, $111, Kelly Wearstler,; embellished sandals, $90, .

Festive / Dress to Impress

"Festive"/ "Dress to Impress"

Everytime I see this , I think , "What? Do you think I normally dress to not impress?" But I guess they mean to step it up a notch, in the sort of high-voltage stuff that seems very New Year's Eve to me: full skirts, sequins, mega-heels, major makeup.

Short-sleeve sequin dress, $140, Ali Ro,; false eyelashes, $15, Illamasqua,; navy party skirt, $195,; lace court shoe, $49.90,

Casual Chic

"Casual Chic"

This one should just say "casual but not really, haha" or "casual but not jeans-casual, eww." It means you've got to step it up a teeny bit with proper pants and a blouse, or maybe a sundress and sandals. (Add red lipstick if you're worried you're on the borderline. It always makes everything look a level more polished.)

Polka dot blouse, $198, J.Crew,; cuvee chic lipstick, $34, bite beauty,; trousers with zips on waist, $ 59.90,; leather ballerinas, $79.99,

    • Police baffled by couple found dead next to untouched bags of Taco Bell — and not much else

Cameron and Courtney Hulet were lying on their living room floor when a neighbor saw them. The neighbor didn’t think much of it. She heard moans and figured they were asleep. She closed the front door, which the couple had a habit of leaving open, David Uhl, manager of the southeast Michigan village of Dundee, told The Washington Post. It was Tuesday morning. The neighbor didn’t see the Hulets all day, she told authorities. She went back to check on them later that night. They were still lying next to each other. Taco Bell bags and drinks sat next to them on a table, untouched. The woman had a male friend check on them, Uhl said. Police were called to the apartment shortly before midnight on

Who says you have to rock a billowing jersey to show your sportsmanship? Not Emily Ratajkowski, who showcased her toned physique as she cheered on the Los Angeles Dodgers at a baseball game in L.A. on Thursday. The model and actress took a minimalist approach to dressing for the sidelines and rocked a black pair of high-waist jeans with a long-sleeve white crop top that showcased her abs. She proudly put forth her support of the hometown team with a black cap that simply read "LA"

    • Clinton jumps to double-digit lead over Trump: poll

Hillary Clinton has soared to a 12-point lead over Donald Trump in the race for the White House, according to a new poll released Sunday, with the real estate magnate's support tanking among key voter groups. The Republican presidential nominee has seen dismal poll numbers since a string of women came forward earlier this month to accuse him of sexual assault or inappropriate behavior in the past. Clinton, the Democratic former secretary of state, leads 50 percent to 38 percent in a four-way contest with two minor party candidates, according to a national ABC News poll.

Here’s something we all have in common with Jay Z: He misses the “old Kanye.” Roc-A-Fella co-founder Kareem “Biggs” Burke revealed as much following Kanye West’s surprising rant against his idol last week. Kanye blasted Jay for not personally visiting him after wife Kim Kardashian got robbed in Paris, for never setting up a playdate with their kids, and for Tidal politics preventing him from linking up with Drake, an Apple Music artist. “I was shocked to hear what Kanye said onstage,” Burke told Page Six at his Reasonable Doubt 20th anniversary pop-up shop on Saturday.

The final debate sketch wasn’t the only time Tom Hanks and Saturday Night Live decided to roast Donald Trump. S.N.L. hasn’t exactly been gentle on Trump supporters this election season. Or did you miss that fake ad last year where the show unflinchingly compared them to Nazis? So, knowing some biting political commentary is coming, it’s surprising to see Tom Hanks—who, earlier in the night, leaned into his gentle, “America’s Dad” persona—put on that red “Make America Great Again” cap for a “Black Jeopardy!” sketch. But, either way, it was good to see Hanks behind the old Jeopardy! podium where he made such a splash playing a dumbed down version of himself opposite Will Ferrell’s Alex Trebek back

The American vigilante hacker known as Jester (whose signature graphic is shown above) took a swipe at Russia for hacking U.S. sites. The self-described “gray hat” hacker who calls himself “Jester” hacked the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website Friday night. His message: “Stop attacking Americans,” according to CNNMoney. Anyone who visited the Ministry website after the hack first heard the intentionally loud, annoying, attention-demanding dial tone sound that plays just before American emergency broadcast civil alert messages. Jester’s letter to the Ministry displayed in full on the site’s homepage. The letter, which no longer appears on the site but was still visible Saturday, went

Humans like to do amazing things just because we can. Things like landing on the moon, inventing the Cronut, and building the tallest building in the world in 14 months at the height of the Great Depression. The Empire State Building is one of the most recognizable landmarks in New York City, beloved for its Art Deco style and colorful lights. For 41 years it was the tallest skyscraper in the world. Although its record has long since been broken, the Empire State Building still stands on Fifth Avenue as a testament to the power of human imagination and ingenuity, and hosts millions of visitors each year.
