Salute these shorts for summer

Summer is upon us, and it’s time to start thinking about shorts. Depending on where you live, chances are good that you’re getting ready to pull out that bin full of your shorts from last summer (and probably many summers before). As you do that, allow me to make a suggestion: consider throwing out at least half of them. If they have pockets that you don’t use, if they are past the knee, or if they have embroidered whales or lobsters, it’s time to say good-bye.

Luckily, I have five of my favorite new shorts waiting in the wings, and there’s a little something for everyone. (Even you, Dad.)

JACK SPADE

I’m just going to assume that you have already gotten rid of your pleated khaki shorts years ago. If not, here is the Barneys Web site. You are going to need a lot more help than just this one pair. If you are, however, now growing bored of your plain-front khakis, then why not add a little color blocking to your life? Fun, no?

J.CREW

I have been looking for a pair of shorts just like these. They’re short enough to show off a little leg without being short enough to make me look creepy. I plan on getting them in every color. This is going to be my short for the summer.

BAND OF OUTSIDERS

O.K.—I know that I said to ixnay the shorts with the embroidered whales, but these are not whales. They are sailboats. And they are Band of Outsiders, so it’s a very different thing. I feel that these shorts are almost poking fun at the Nantucket preppy trend.

SATURDAYS

Saturdays has perfected minimal beachwear, and, quite frankly, everything they make is heaven. These Tommy chino shorts are the perfect length and fit. I suggest getting a pair in green or navy, but I love them in every color offered. They’re a new classic, and you will live in them all summer long. You may even be tempted to wear them to the office. Don’t.

ORLEBAR BROWN

Orlebar has already become the swimsuit of the moment—you’d be hard-pressed to go to the Hamptons without seeing all of the chic men wearing these. I love the idea of cutoff sweatpants; they are super-comfortable and great for lounging around the house but unfortunately too casual for much else.

These Orlebar Brown sweat shorts are the perfect solution: they, too, are incredibly soft and comfortable, but the finished hem makes them acceptable to wear outside the house.

Hi, Carolyn: Should I be worried that my wife and I have had no sex for literally years? I am guessing it is at least three years. Not even heavy make-out sessions. It just seems that my wife has no interest. I am afraid to broach the subject for fear of a negative answer. We don’t sleep in the same bed anymore either. I am a big snorer and chose to sleep in the guest room. It’s fine because she is a light sleeper and I am happier that she is getting her sleep. I do use a CPAP but it does come off sometimes. The no-sex thing just happened over time. We have both gained some weight but we are not obese — we could both lose 20 or 30 pounds. Is this normal or should we seek help? J.: Should I be

And now, thanks to Ciara, we've got another example to save to our "haircut inspiration" iPhone folder. (What, like you don't have one?) The singer debuted her new haircut on Instagram this week, and it no doubt will have you re-think going longer and darker for winter. Ciara has spent most of the year with long blond, ombré hair. In fact, we loved it so much it topped out as one of our favorite cuts and colors for spring (That's it pictured above.) Joseph Mascolo, who played iconic villain Stefano DiMera on the NBC daytime soap Days of Our Lives, has died. He was 87 years old. Mascolo passed away Thursday after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, the show said in a statement on Friday. He joined the Days cast in 1982 and made crime lord/business tycoon Stefano DiMera into one of the most hated (and most loved) bad guys in soap-opera history. Mascolo left and returned to the role of Stefano several times over the years, even joining CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful for an extended stint from 2001 to 2006. But he always came back to Days, most recently for the character’s death earlier this year. He also made appearances on TV shows like

    • In ‘Jackie,’ Jackie Kennedy is a bad widow. That’s good.

When I began dating the man who would eventually become my husband, my mom had only one concern: that he, 17 years my senior, would die and leave me a “young widow.” “If he lives to the same age his father did, I’ll be 43 when he dies,” I said, laughing at how far away that impossible number seemed. I turned 40 last week. My husband is in good health (for a man of his advanced age, HI HONEY!), but I’d be lying if I said there’s not a small part of my brain constantly reminding me that he — we — have three years left. “Jackie” is the story of one of the most famous young widows in history: Jackie Kennedy was 34 when her husband was assassinated. I’ve only seen the archival footage that all of

    • This Classic '80s Trend is About to Make a Huge Comeback (13 photos)

It's December, which means those winter excursions to the mountains are right around the corner – time to prepare your best snow bunny OOTDs for Instagram pictures along the white shimmery slopes. According to Polyvore , people have already started to look for the perfect ski attire, with searches for ski pants up 84% in comparison to last year. That may be influenced in part by the appearance of ski-inspired stirrup pants on the Fall 2016 runways at Balenciaga. In doing so, designer Demna Gvasalia set a huge trend, with mass retailers releasing similar styles shortly after his presentation. Can you blame them? Before they were an ’80s staple, they were a symbol of Old Hollywood glamour. They first made an appearance in the 1950s, when Bogner released the stirrup pants which became an instant success and were eventually nicknamed "The Bogners." Actresses like Marilyn Monroe donned the pants as they vacationed in the mountains. So if you're looking for a cute look to wear on or off the slopes this winter, get yourself a pair of stirrup ski pants! They're more flattering then the typical bulky ski pants that only make you look like a marshmallow. If you can't find one you particularly like but like the look of the stirrup, fake it till you make it , with a pair of stirrup leggings worn underneath a more form-fitting ski pant. So hit the slopes in style and shop ahead some of our favorite ski stirrups and pants.
