Old-fashioned Cheerios still a healthy cereal pick

Old-fashioned Cheerios. With a heaping scoop of fresh fruit.
Not everyone has the time to stir steel-cut oats for 25 minutes before work. But as your mother insisted before she shoved you off to school every morning, you have to eat breakfast. And that doesn't mean pouring a heaping bowl of your favorite neon-colored marshmallow cereal. Have you ever looked at the nutrition facts on a cereal box?

Lucky Charms has 10 grams of sugar. Frosted Mini-Wheats has 11. Post Raisin Bran contains a staggering 20 grams! Even Bear Naked fruit and nut granola—a seemingly healthy choice—clocks in at six, the same as Honey Bunches of Oats. Most cereal, even granola, is a shockingly not-so-great way to start the day. But it's also super-fast and convenient when you're rushing out the door. So we at the GQ Institute For Not Getting Fatter Than We Have To sought professional expertise to ask: What's the least bad cereal out there?

The answer: Old-fashioned Cheerios. With a heaping scoop of fresh fruit.

"A cup of Cheerios is 100 calories and the first ingredient is whole-grain oats," says registered dietitian Kim Kirchherr. A serving from that big yellow box  (which debuted in 1941 as Cheerioats) has only one gram of sugar. It's low in calories—less than half the caloric load of a bowl of Grape Nuts, which weigh in at 210 calories per servingand, as the original name suggests, the primary ingredient is whole-grain oats, which help reduce the risk of type-two diabetes and heart disease. Men need 38 grams of fiber daily, and Kirchherr recommends looking for a cereal with at least three grams per serving, which is exactly what Cheerios offer. You can add even more with fresh fruit.

"Cereal is a vessel for a lot of other good stuff," adds Jim White, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. "Fruit is a great way to increase fiber. It'll keep you full longer. It can really get men jump-started for the day." And if you're wondering what to pour on top of it, White likes organic skim milk. "It has protein to build muscles, calcium to help support strong bones, electrolytes to help replace after a hard workout, and water to help hydrate the body. It's one of the perfect foods for men."

One thing you'll notice once you start poring over the nutrition labels in the cereal aisle is the miniscule serving size. It's generally one cup, which feels like half of what you feed your dog for breakfast. "Most guys grab a bowl and put as much as they can. They don't realize it could be three to five times the serving," White says. "You have to watch that portion size."

This is where the fruit comes into play. It makes a small bowl of Cheerios—that one measly cup—seem a hell of a lot bigger. Throw in a half-cup of sliced strawberries or bananas, and you won't even think about pouring a second bowl.

  • After ‘jealous rage,’ killer sentenced to life without parole in Target parking lot murder

The eight-foot projection screen dropped from a courtroom ceiling. The surveillance video began to play. And from her seat in the second row, Cassandra Atkens — in court Thursday to watch her daughter’s killer be sentenced — knew what she was about to see. The video showed how light it still was at 7:17 p.m. June 1, 2015, in a Target store parking lot in Germantown where Atkens’s daughter, Mariam “Shadé” Adebayo, had agreed to meet ex-boyfriend Donald Bricker one more time. She was there to tell him it really was over. He pulled up in his truck, then got in her car and brought out a .44-caliber, replica-style black-powder revolver — a gun that he’d ordered online and that had arrived just that

  • U.S. has few good options for response to Philippines' Duterte

By Yeganeh Torbati and David Brunnstrom WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Obama administration has few good options and limited leverage as it struggles to craft a response to Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's increasingly hostile rhetoric towards the United States and his warm embrace of China. For months, Washington has played down Duterte's anti-American insults and broadsides. Duterte's latest outburst, less than three weeks before the U.S. presidential election, casts further doubt on the seven-decade U.S.-Philippine alliance and threatens to further undermine President Barack Obama's faltering "pivot" to Asia as a counterbalance to China's growing assertiveness.

  • Iceland drills hottest hole to tap into energy of molten magma

Drilling into hot rocks to tap geothermal energy is one thing. Drilling deep enough to tap the energy from magma oozing into volcanoes is quite another, offering a massive increase in the potential to exploit Earth’s inner heat. That is the task of a rig now drilling 5 kilometres into the rugged landscape of old lava flows in Reykjanes, at the south-west corner of Iceland. Drilling began on 12 August. By the end of the year, the Iceland Deep Drilling Project (IDDP) hopes to have created the hottest hole in the world, hitting temperatures anywhere between 400 and 1000 °C. The drilling will penetrate a landward extension of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge – a major boundary between Earth’s tectonic plates

  • Virginia Tech Students Made An Awful Jose Fernandez Sign To Mock Miami Football

College students, ironically, are not always known to be the brightest of bulbs, and whoever decided to hang this banner at Virginia Tech certainly isn’t doing anything to improve that reputation. Mocking the death of Miami Marlins’ pitcher Jose Fernandez, who passed away in a tragic boating accident last month, the sign was put out in advance of the Miami Hurricanes’ visit to Blacksburg for their ACC battle on Thursday night. Whoever made this sign wanted to make sure everyone knew that they respect Fernandez, as they extended the “courtesy” to throw an RIP at the end.

  • Kourtney Kardashian awkwardly 'blanks' TV hosts who ask about Kim

Kourtney Kardashian had an awkward on-air moment Thursday morning when hosts of an Australian morning program asked how her sister Kim Kardashian is holding up after her robbery ordeal.   The questions was met with bizarre silence, while the reality TV star sat staring off camera, presumably listening to the panicked advice of her publicists.  SEE ALSO: Khloe Kardashian DGAF about Donald Trump calling her a 'piglet' Making matters worse, the connection was dropped. When producers got Kardashian back on the line post-ad break, she explained "we had a bad connection."   "I think she's totally blanking me on that question," said David Campbell, co-host of Today Extra , adding, "She could just say her sister is fine! I mean I think we just said that you know we're very concerned and we were onside and we hoped that everyone's fine, which I still do." According to The Herald Sun , Kourtney insisted that she be re-connected to the show’s host in order to address the question. Once connected, she discussed how the Kardashian klan was feeling after her sister was held at gunpoint during the Paris robbery.  "I think we're all really still shaken up and I just — you know, I think she has a big supportive family and I know that, like, all of the traumatic things that we've been through, you know, we get through them together as a family and that's what family is all about," she said.  While it might not be the most informative response ever uttered, it may have been worth it as an act of "saving face." What's a potential little white lie about a technical glitch between friends, anyway?   Many of us would love to use the old "we just had a bad connection" excuse to get out of conversations IRL, sometimes.   Kim Kardashian West was robbed at gunpoint in Paris
