Welcome to October – the month between September back to school sales and November holiday shopping.

You’ll find some great deals on off-season purchases such as air conditioners. You’ll also find deals on things that are welcome all year, such as lingerie and jeans. Here’s our list of some of the best things to buy this month:

Air Conditioners

Radio and TV ads are reminding you that summer may be over, but there’s never a better time to buy an air conditioning unit or a whole home system. They’re right. The large units take up a lot of space in stores gearing up for holiday shopping. Expect big markdowns on these units from retailers who need to free up floor space. If you’re looking for a good, midsize unit for a reasonable price, try the LG LW8011ER.

Denim

Expect deep price cuts on last year’s denim styles this month. The back to school shoppers may have scooped up tons of jeans for their kids, but the items that remain will be priced to sell. Not all the deals will be on last year’s fashions – and let’s be honest, a good pair of jeans is always in style.

However, cross-promotion deals are also a steal. For instance, the popular Lucky Brand is offering 50% off any top with any regularly priced jean purchase.

Toys

Let the holiday toy mania begin. While the shopping season gets intense and competitive in November, prudent shoppers may find October to be a better month to buy gifts for the kids. Stores drop prices on last year’s toys to make way for the new crop.

As has been the case for the past few years, retailers are also pushing to get the shopping season started as early as possible. Purists may frown on this, but the truth is that good deals can be had earlier than ever before.

Toys R’ Us has stated that the big toys of this holiday season will include kids tablets and the "Let's Rock" Elmo doll.

Lingerie

October has become the month for savvy shoppers to buy lingerie – for themselves or as gifts – at drastic discounts.

The well-known Frederick's of Hollywood not only provides free shipping for purchases above $95, but they’re offering an amazing 70% off certain items. Tasteful lingerie never goes out of style. And if the garments are of high quality, they can last a lifetime.

Retailers realize that cookware can also make great gifts if they’re priced right.

For instance, Macy’s is selling a 12-piece Farberware Premium Professional cookware set for $99.99, reduced from $170.

Dear Amy: My wife of more than 40 years and I had a mutual parting of ways five years ago. Though we went our separate ways, we harbor no searing animosity toward each other and we regularly talk in civil and polite tones. My former wife thought I was going in the wrong direction, but I quickly made an effort to meet a new woman through online dating. I was successful in that venture. My ex joined many different clubs and organizations and eventually fell in with a man whose company she enjoys. Happy ending? I wish. I was happy for my ex, but women I met online told me that this guy continues to occupy a spot in the online dating scene, messaging women about his availability. It is not my business,

    • Russia intervened to help Trump win election: intelligence officials

By John Walcott WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. intelligence analysts have concluded that Russia intervened in the 2016 election to help President-elect Donald Trump win the White House, and not just to undermine confidence in the U.S. electoral system, a senior U.S. official said on Friday. U.S. intelligence agencies have assessed that as the 2016 presidential campaign progressed, Russian government officials devoted increasing attention to assisting Trump's effort to win the election, the U.S. official familiar with the finding told Reuters on Friday night, speaking on condition of anonymity. The president-elect's transition office released a statement that exaggerated his margin of victory and attacked the U.S. intelligence community that Trump will soon command, but did not address the analysts' conclusion.

    • He was set for surgery — until another doctor said the diagnosis was all wrong

A 65-year-old computer programmer came to the office of Marvin M. Lipman, Consumer Reports’ chief medical adviser, for an examination to clear him for spinal surgery the following week. He’d been experiencing leg pain while walking, and his orthopedist had scheduled surgery after an MRI showed lumbar spinal stenosis, or an overgrowth of arthritic bone in the spine. Lipman thought it seemed straightforward enough. But his case provided a powerful example of why it’s rarely a good idea to rush into surgery, and why it’s wise to remember that very different health problems can sometimes look remarkably alike. Step on the surgery brakes Lipman’s patient told him that his symptoms had started about
