Make the most of National Splurge Day

June 18 is National Splurge Day. So said Adrienne Sioux Koopersmith, who calls herself “America’s premier eventologist,” when she invented it in 1994. Somehow it got traction.

Now every June 18 has become an excuse for Americans to treat themselves to things they might not typically buy. Just like birthdays. According to Ron Swanson, “Birthdays were invented by Hallmark to sell cards.”I'm not one to suggest wanton spending in this - or any other - economy. "It sends a shiver down our frugal, money-saving spines,” says the good folks at Dealnews, and I couldn’t agree more. Like any bad idea, if you’re to splurge on things you may not need you may as well do it as safely as possible. That is why I’ve teamed up with Dealnews to help diehard shoppers through this this vapid faux-holiday and, hopefully, save you some dough (and pride) along the way.

The Ultimate Chair

The Aeron Chair by Herman Miller

Congratulations to those of you whose bosses provide Aeron chairs in the workforce. They are among the most ergonomically beautiful chairs on the market. And they have the prices to match.“Starting at $679, these seats are way more expensive than the ones you'll find at Office Depot, OfficeMax, and Staples. However, when you’re sitting in a chair for at least 40 hours a week, shouldn’t you gets something that's designed to fit your butt like a glove?”

The chair comes with a full 12-year warranty, which is better than you can say for a lot of furniture at this price point. If you splurge on this item, it’s because you value your spine and want a piece of furniture that will last instead of that cheap “executive chair” you buy every few years only to deposit on the curb next to your trash when it becomes impossible to adjust.

Bed Linens

The average American spends almost nine hours a day sleeping, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Sadly, they probably spend those nine hours sleeping on average sheets. If you’ve been to a nice hotel, you know the difference.“When it comes to bedding, treat yourself like a king (or twin, or queen, or California king) because there's a noticeable difference between budget, 200-thread-count sheets and luxury, Egyptian Cotton sheets.”

“The point of makeup is to enhance a person’s beauty in an inconspicuous way. Cheaper cosmetics are less likely to look natural and will probably cake up later in the day and become a conspicuous way of 'de-hancing' your beauty. Better quality cosmetics are far more likely to work with the conditions of your skin and look good on you, but they'll cost a bit more.”

Toilet Paper

Let’s be honest with each other: We all prefer our own bathroom. It’s our home base. Our Fortress of Solitude appointed with the magazines we like to read and a door that locks securely. When the time comes to handle one of life’s necessary – but private – duties, we want to be in our own bathroom. So why do we buy cheap toilet paper? Can’t we all agree that comfort in the swim trunk area is something worth a few extra dollars?“Yes, it may last a little longer per roll, but we advocate treating your delicate parts a little more delicately. And, honestly, with all the toilet paper deals we see, it's hard to even call this one a splurge, since it's so easy to save money on the ‘good stuff.’”

Razors and Razor BladesHave you ever looked in a friend's medicine cabinet – just looking for some Aspirin, of course – and wondered why he had so many half-used, dime store razors in there? I mean, it's your face, Man! Why shred it to save a few sheckles?“It's worth your comfort to spend a bit more to get a better shave — one that doesn't result in having to apply pieces of toilet paper all over your money maker afterwards. Now, we're not advocating for any specific brand, so buy whatever you can find a deal on. Just stop buying the blades that are sold by bulk in a bag.”

The toddler tattoo

If there’s one shopping motto that has served me well in life it is this: “Never buy bargain tattoos or half-priced sushi.” Still, not a week goes by when I don’t see some teenager at the deli showing off some scribbles on his arm he got “from a friend” who is a “wicked good tattoo artist.” Trust me. I have a sleeve of Spider-Man tattoos that’s nearly 20 years old and it looks as good as it did when it was new. Look for a reputable artist in a clean shop displaying the proper license certificates. Ask a lot of questions, peruse examples of their work and even ask for references from prior clients. Also, don’t go to a tattoo studio if you don’t know what kind of tattoo you want. If you don’t know, you’re not ready for one.

Major Home Improvement

"How hard could it be to build a deck?" Answer: Very. DIY is great, but sometimes it pays to pay a professional to get it done faster and better than you ever could. Sure, you can save some money, but do you have the time, skill, and patience to get it done right? Something that might take you a month of Sundays to build could have taken a professional a single afternoon. So unless DIY is ‘your thing,’ avoid catastrophe and hire a pro instead.”

Clothing and Shoes

Good clothing is often more expensive because more care and better quality materials were used in making it. I don’t think you should always buy the high-end, designer original items, but clothing is truly a “get what you pay for” proposition. Thrift stores are a great choice if you like vintage, well-made clothing and don’t mind hunting. But the appeal of cheap outfits at bargain stores such as Old Navy quickly fades away when that outfit falls apart by the next season. After you invest in better clothes, make sure to read up on how to make clothing last longer.

New Multiplayer Video Games

I’m a huge proponent of buying used video games a few months after they launch. They’re cheaper and just as entertaining no matter when you buy them. Unless you’re into multiplayer.“If you like playing in giant frag-fests online, then you'll want to jump on a game as soon as it’s released, as the online multiplayer community is a constantly-shifting entity, centered around the latest titles. Wait a couple months to get a deal on a game, and you'll find the multiplayer community has dried up, as players have moved on to the next game. Thankfully, many game preorders see discounts or include other perks (exclusive downloadable content or gift cards), so it's not exactly like paying retail, anyway.”

Movies at the Theater

Even the finest home theater systems can’t compare to the thrill of seeing a new-release film at a modern movie theater. You’re paying the extra money to laugh with a crowd at a comedy or cheer with a packed house at the climax of an uplifting summer blockbuster. You’re paying for an experience. Even if it’s something you only do a few times a year – it is insanely expensive, after all – it’s worth it if you pick the right movie.

(CNN)It happens so fast you almost miss it. A man walks down the hallway of a school, crossing paths with a young boy. Suddenly, without provocation, the man reaches down and punches the boy in his stomach. He then casually walks toward the door. The boy falls to his knees, doubled over in obvious pain. The man pauses, just for a second, to look over his shoulder at the boy, before walking out. Surveillance video captured this shocking encounter, which happened last week at the KIPP DC Spring Academy in Washington DC. The boy in the video, 7-year-old John Mclean, told CNN affiliate WJLA that the punch to the gut was "real painful." It was painful for John's mother to see as well. She says the

Cameron and Courtney Hulet were lying on their living room floor when a neighbor saw them. The neighbor didn’t think much of it. She heard moans and figured they were asleep. She closed the front door, which the couple had a habit of leaving open, David Uhl, manager of the southeast Michigan village of Dundee, told The Washington Post. It was Tuesday morning. The neighbor said she didn’t see the Hulets all day, according to Uhl. She went back to check on them later that night. They were still lying next to each other. Taco Bell bags and drinks sat next to them on a table, untouched. The woman had a male friend check on them, Uhl said. Police were called to the apartment shortly before midnight

    • Report claims iPhone 8 will feature a revolutionary new design that no one saw coming

Next year, Apple is expected to release a completely redesigned iPhone 8 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone. Following three consecutive years of seeing the same design reused in the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone 7, Apple is expected to make dramatic changes to the appearance of its next-generation iPhone, and to the technology included inside the device. Previous reports have stated that the new iPhone 8 will feature an OLED display that covers almost all of the phone's face, and the home button and fingerprint scanner will be embedded beneath the screen. The phone is also expected to have a glass back instead of aluminum, and metal will surround the outer edges as it did on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4. According to a new report, however, these claims have it all wrong and the iPhone 8's new design will be unlike anything the world has ever seen. DON'T MISS:  iPhone 7 Plus vs Google Pixel speed tests: Yup, Android still gets crushed According to everything we've heard so far from tried and true sources, next year's iPhone 8 sounds pretty terrific. The new OLED screen is long overdue and Apple's removal of the home button may finally let it shrink down the overall size of its iPhones without decreasing the size of the displays. Fans are excited enough as it is, but now a new report claims that Apple's upcoming iPhone redesign is far more revolutionary than any previous rumors claimed. "The next iPhone will be, I am told, a clear piece of glass (er, Gorilla Glass sandwich with other polycarbonates for being pretty shatter resistant if dropped) with a next-generation OLED screen (I have several sources confirming this)," wrote longtime tech blogger and current Entrepreneur in Residence at UploadVR in a post on Facebook . "You pop it into a headset which has eye sensors on it, which enables the next iPhone to have a higher apparent frame rate and polygon count than a PC with a Nvidia 1080 card in it." He says the next-generation iPhone will be clear — as in, completely transparent so that users can see straight through it — so that Apple can use it to power an augmented reality experience similar to the one offered by Microsoft's HoloLens. "The phone itself has a next-generation 3D sensor from Primesense, which Apple bought," Scoble added. "Apple has 600 engineers working in Israel on just the sensor. It's the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. It's the first product introduction in Apple's new amazing headquarters. It's a big f**king deal and will change this industry deeply." He continued, "Also, updates from new sources: expect battery and antennas to be hidden around the edges of the screen, which explains how Apple will fit in some of the pieces even while most of the chips that make up a phone are in a pack/strip at the bottom of the phone." This all sounds absolutely incredible... and completely implausible. First, we're years away from having technology that would enable Apple to build an iPhone like the one Scoble describes with a battery and antennas "hidden around the edges of the screen" that would last longer than about 4 minutes on a charge. We've seen some pretty spectacular tech as far as transparent displays are concerned — check out this invisible TV from Panasonic , which is incredible — but scaling it down to a device the size of a smartphone isn't happening in 2017. Beyond that, this contradicts everything we've heard so far from the most reliable sources in the world when it comes to leaking Apple's plans, such as The Wall Street Journal and KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Scoble has plenty of sources in the startup world and he's had some scoops in the past, but he doesn't quite have the kind of track record with Apple scoops that would make us confident in these outlandish claims, however much we'd love for them to be true.
