How to get the best out of your self tanner

Best ways to apply self tanner

(David Stesner)

Haphazard self-tanner applications may fade, but the pictures will live on Facebook forever. Follow these ten steps to score a faux glow that looks natural.

If you need to get a wax or a manicure, touch up your hair color, or shave your legs, do it before applying any self-tanner. "All of those treatments can remove self-tanner," says spray tanner Anna Stankiewicz of Louise O'Connor Salon in New York City.

Exfoliate your skin

(Dan Drury)

Self-tanner sinks into dry skin, leaving dark patches that look entirely unnatural (and, let's be honest, a little gross). Slough away any flakes on your body with a coarse scrub, focusing on rough spots like the knees, elbows, ankles, and heels.

For your face, use a cleanser with glycolic or salicylic acid and a skin brush such as the Clarisonic Aria (starting at $200, Yahoo! Shopping) to remove dead, dull skin.

Avoid anything oil-based, since it leaves behind residue that causes streaks, Stankiewicz says.

Dry off first

(David Stesner)

We know, we know—this one seems way too obvious. But after showering, towel off and wait ten minutes until you're 100 percent dry.

Soften the skin

(Regan Cameron)

So we just said to make sure you're completely, totally, not-a-drop-of-water-on-you dry, but you'll need to add a little moisture back into your skin before you get to the self-tanner.

Dab a lightweight lotion around your nostrils, knees, elbows, and ankles (as well as any other dry spots) to keep them from turning dark or orange, Stankiewicz says.

Our picks? DDF Ultra-Lite Oil-Free Moisturizing Dew ($42, for our face and Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion SPF 15 ($10.61, for our body.

Pick out your self-tanner

(David Stesner)

"I think mousses are the easiest to rub in, but sprays are great for hard-to-reach areas," Stankiewicz says.

The rule of thumb? Choose a self-tanner for your skin tone, not your desired result. Go with a light to medium formula if you have fair skin and a dark formula for olive tones. If you opt for a gradual formula, remember that it can take two to four applications to reach the right shade.

St. Tropez Self Tan Dark Bronzing Mousse ($44, is one of our favorites for body, while we love Clarins Liquid Bronze Self Tanning For Face and Décolleté ($35 on for our face.

How to apply self tanner

(David Stesner)

This technique separates gorgeous sunless glows from bad fake tans. With clean hands (or latex gloves, if you prefer), smooth on self-tanner in circular motions approximately one teaspoon at a time.

Start at your ankles and work your way up to your shoulders to prevent any weird marks when you bend over, and save your arms and hands for last.

Self tanner for the face

(Tesh Patel)

You've come too far to get careless now. Dab a dime-size amount of formula where you'd naturally tan (your forehead, the apples of your cheeks, the bridge of your nose, and your chin) and blend outward with your fingertips.

Be extra careful around the nose and above the top lip—these areas pick up more color because they tend to be drier. Using what's left on your fingers, feather the tanner out into your hairline and past the jawbone. Wash your hands immediately after you finish.

Stop tanner from transferring to clothing

(Roger Cabello)

Give the formula extra time to dry. "If the directions say five minutes, wait ten," Stankiewicz says. Then brush a talc-free baby powder all over. "It stops the tanner from transferring to your clothes," she says. Avoid showering or sweating for 6 to 8 hours.

Rub a lemon on if streaks appear

(David Cook)

Self-tanner mistakes happen, but there's no need to start from scratch when they do. If streaks or splotches appear, Stankiewicz recommends rubbing half a lemon on the area for two minutes before lightly buffing it with a damp towel.

Preserving your tan

(David Stesner)

We can't guarantee how long your bronze will last, but certain measures can be taken to prolong it.

Wash with a gentle cleanser and make sure your skin is always moisturized. Avoid using retinols and acne treatments, which can dissolve color on your face. When you're ready to refresh your skin, exfoliate and begin the cycle again.

DES MOINES — A substitute teacher accused of having sex with a 17-year-old high school student in Cedar Rapids claims the student seduced her. Mary Beth Haglin was charged in July with sexual exploitation by a teacher. On Monday, she appeared on Dr. Phil, accusing the student of seducing her and sharing sexy photos with his friends. “Many people see him as the victim and me as the perpetrator. From a psychological standpoint and from every other standpoint, I feel like I am the victim,” Haglin said on the Dr. Phil show, citing the student's intelligence and “elevated vocabulary” as part of the seduction. Haglin pleaded not guilty to sexual exploitation by a school employee. Her trial is set to

    • Kourtney Kardashian awkwardly 'blanks' TV hosts who ask about Kim

Kourtney Kardashian had an awkward on-air moment Thursday morning when hosts of an Australian morning program asked how her sister Kim Kardashian is holding up after her robbery ordeal.   The questions was met with bizarre silence, while the reality TV star sat staring off camera, presumably listening to the panicked advice of her publicists.  SEE ALSO: Khloe Kardashian DGAF about Donald Trump calling her a 'piglet' Making matters worse, the connection was dropped. When producers got Kardashian back on the line post-ad break, she explained "we had a bad connection."   "I think she's totally blanking me on that question," said David Campbell, co-host of Today Extra , adding, "She could just say her sister is fine! I mean I think we just said that you know we're very concerned and we were onside and we hoped that everyone's fine, which I still do." According to The Herald Sun , Kourtney insisted that she be re-connected to the show’s host in order to address the question. Once connected, she discussed how the Kardashian klan was feeling after her sister was held at gunpoint during the Paris robbery.  "I think we're all really still shaken up and I just — you know, I think she has a big supportive family and I know that, like, all of the traumatic things that we've been through, you know, we get through them together as a family and that's what family is all about," she said.  While it might not be the most informative response ever uttered, it may have been worth it as an act of "saving face." What's a potential little white lie about a technical glitch between friends, anyway?   Many of us would love to use the old "we just had a bad connection" excuse to get out of conversations IRL, sometimes.   Kim Kardashian West was robbed at gunpoint in Paris

    • Sick Puppy Completely Loses it After Being Reunited With Firefighter Who Saved Him (VIDEO)

It is often said that a firefighter is never off duty. This idea stems from the fact that no matter where a firefighter is and whether he is on the clock or not, he will always help someone if they are in need. Well, as the video above proves, this ideology also extends to animals! When Firefighter Thawley from Sacramento, California was walking through the rain and found a sick puppy tied up, he quickly sprang into savior mode. He cleaned the pup up, brought her to Front Street Animal Shelter, and left, knowing that this sweet creature was now in safe and capable hands. However, it seems that the next day, this firefighter couldn’t get this darling pup, now named Chunkie, out of his thoughts

By Ben Blanchard BEIJING (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte announced his "separation" from the United States on Thursday, declaring he had realigned with China as the two agreed to resolve their South China Sea dispute through talks. Duterte made his comments in Beijing, where he is visiting with at least 200 business people to pave the way for what he calls a new commercial alliance as relations with longtime ally Washington deteriorate. "In this venue, your honors, in this venue, I announce my separation from the United States," Duterte told Chinese and Philippine business people, to applause, at a forum in the Great Hall of the People attended by Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli.

A gracious letter written by Republican President George H.W. Bush after he lost the 1992 election to Democrat Bill Clinton is going viral – offering quite a contrast to the comments current Republican nominee Donald Trump made during Wednesday night’s debate. For weeks, Trump has called the election “rigged,” pointing blame at the media and potential voter fraud. During the final debate, the GOP nominee was asked to address these accusations, as well as answer once and for all whether he would “absolutely accept” the result of this election. Some found the candidate’s response shocking. “I will look at it at the time. I’m not looking at anything now. I’ll look at it at the time,” Trump said.
