April Deals

Shopping

Spring seemed to take its sweet time getting here, but it has finally sprung. Spring training is over and Opening Day has come. The long winter of 2013 has finally given way to new beginnings and longer days.

For consumers, April means great deals on everything from laptops to tablet computers.

Sales cycles seem to track the same way every year. If past years are any indication, retailers are anticipating your spring cleaning and shopping needs. Now that you’re preparing to switch out your winter clothes for lighter looks and clean out the garage you’ve neglected all winter, retailers await you with sales on corresponding products.

April isn’t a big month for gift-giving holidays; unless you’re a big Winston Churchill fan, in which case mark your calendar for April 9. So some of these deals may not be as exciting as other months. But educated consumers don’t crave excitement. They crave a good deal.

1. Kindle Fire HD

Our friends at Dealnews dug through their archives from previous years to come up with predicted good deals for this month. They also noted Amazon announced last month that it would cut prices on all of its 8.9” Fire HD Special Offer tablets.

Prices now start at $269 for the base 16GB Wi-Fi version, and although that particular model has sold for less before.

“In general each model is now at or near the lowest price we've seen – making it a good time to give the Fire HD a try.”

2. Winter items

It’s been a tough winter for many Americans. If you’re among those who were hit hard by one blizzard after another, you may be in the market for some new snow removal tools such as snowblowers, plows and shovels.

These items will see deep discounts this month but are likely to go fast. Also keep an eye out for deals on other cold-weather necessities, such as ice scrapers, snow tires and ice melt.

Check out the Craftsman 24" 179cc Dula-Storage Snowblower at Sears. It's a good size for most homeowners and is on sale for $150 off the retail price.

3. Spring clothing

Dealnews says the rule of thumb for clothing deals is to wait about two months after a new season of apparel hits stores before you can expect good discounts. April fits the bill.

Expect sales of 30% to 40% for mid-season promotions. Those deals go deeper in May, when you can get discounts of half off or more.

Look for casual shoes, skirts, golf apparel and running clothing and shoes. Check out this Mountain Hardwear Runoff Rain Jacket from REI for 50% off.

4. Large HDTVs

If you think every month lately seems to be a good month to buy an HDTV, you’re correct. Every month since Black Friday has seen reductions in prices for large HDTVs. They are at or near all-time lows.

“The price of 55-inch 3-D LCD HDTVs, for instance, hit all-time lows last month, with prices starting at $747, $3 under February's best price. Likewise, 55-inch (non-3-D) name-brand LCD HDTVs hit their second-lowest price of the past 12 months and deals started at $688. That’s a $51 difference from our all-time low during Black Friday. Lastly, 60-inch LCD HDTVs bottomed out at $698 in March, which is just $10 shy of the size category's best price on Black Friday,” said Dealnews.

Check out this awesome bundle from Samsung that includes a huge 3D HDTV, Blu-ray Disc player and glasses for 20% off.

5. Laptops

Windows 8 laptops are not selling well. Microsoft is compensating by offering OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) discounts of up to 20% on licenses for Windows 8 (and Office).

Dealnews says, “Those discounts are generally for ultraportables, our deal archives show they're also affecting prices of mainstream 15" Ivy Bridge laptops. For instance, just last month we saw a 15.6" Acer Aspire with 6GB of RAM and a 750GB hard drive go for an unprecedented $299. That's the lowest price we've seen for any Ivy Bridge system. It’s also $41 under our February mention, which at the time was also an all-time low.”

They predict the $299 price will become the new norm as it makes its way to touchscreen Windows 8 laptops.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers may have led the Green Bay Packers to a narrow victory during Sunday night’s playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys, but his family did not share in the celebration. According to a new interview with The New York Times published Sunday, Ed Rodgers confirmed that he’s not on speaking terms with his son following the 32-year-old NFL star’s rise in popularity. Word of the family’s rift became public knowledge last spring when the quarterback’s younger brother Jordan appeared on JoJo Fletcher‘s season of The Bachelorette.

A judge in the 209th District Court in Houston said during Vera’s sentencing hearing on Friday that he does not believe the former English teacher is a danger to children or a classic pedophile, the Houston Chronicle reported. Selena Gomez might be the ultimate style chameleon. For Sunday's InStyle Golden Globes afterparty, Selena chose a vaguely boho, ethereal off-the-shoulder white gown from J. Mendel. But last night? Selena did a complete style 180. With the help of her stylist, Kate Young, Selena selected a long, red leather Louis Vuitton dress to attend the Sixth Biennial UNICEF Ball in Los Angeles. Far from appearing heavy, the dress seemed relatively weightless thanks to floral cutout details and a ruffle around the neck. While at the event, Selena made the rounds and said hello to some of her very stylish friends, including new face of Louis Vuitton Léa Seydoux and designer Nicolas Ghesquière. Louis Vuitton

    • Donald Trump may have just destroyed the Republican effort to repeal Obamacare

The Plum Line | Opinion When even the most committed Republicans came around to support Donald Trump in 2016, they made a kind of bet. It wouldn’t matter much that Trump had no apparent fealty to conservative ideology or that he was a complete ignoramus about policy, because he’d be leaving all that boring stuff to them. The Republican Congress would pass its agenda, he’d sign whatever they put in front of him, and they’d all live happily ever after. But now it’s not looking so simple. In fact, Trump just dealt a huge blow to their top priority: repealing the Affordable Care Act. Accomplishing repeal without causing the GOP a political calamity is an extremely delicate enterprise, and the last

In a New York Times story about the family rift, the NFL star's dad, Ed Rodgers, said the family hasn't spoken to the Green Bay quarterback since the end of 2014. The public first became aware of a rift in the Rodgers family when Aaron's younger brother, Jordan, appeared as a contestant on ABC's reality show "The Bachelorette" last summer. • People are showing off photos of their scratched up Jet Black iPhone 7 handsets

Look, we're just going to go ahead and say it: the Jet Black iPhone 7 and the Jet Black iPhone 7 Plus are the most gorgeous smartphones that have ever been created. This is not open to debate. It's a fact. There's simply nothing else like the sleek glossy finish of Apple's Jet Black iPhones, which reflects just the right amount of light to appear as though the glass face of the phone wraps straight around to the back of the device. It's stunning, but there's a pretty big caveat to that bold statement we made. The Jet Black iPhone 7 and the Jet Black iPhone 7 Plus are the most gorgeous smartphones that have ever been created... for about 3 minutes after you first remove one from the box. After that, Apple's Jet Black finish starts to scratch and scuff like crazy, and it's also a magnet for grease and grime. Apple didn't exactly admit how delicate its Jet Black finish is when it unveiled the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus last September, but it did post a disclaimer on its website. Here's that disclaimer in full: The high-gloss finish of the jet black iPhone 7 is achieved through a precision nine-step anodization and polishing process. Its surface is equally as hard as other anodized Apple products; however, its high shine may show fine micro-abrasions with use. If you are concerned about this, we suggest you use one of the many cases available to protect your iPhone. Translation: the Jet Black finish on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is going to scratch. A lot. We've shown you what happens to the Jet Black iPhone finish in a couple of different posts. One showed a Jet Black iPhone 7 Plus after three months , and another showed a Jet Black iPhone 7 Plus after just two months . Both of those posts were scary for potential Jet Black iPhone owners, and now there are even more examples of what Apple's sleek new iPhone finish looks like with normal wear and tear. A post on Reddit from over the weekend asked people to share what their Jet Black iPhones look like now that they've been used. Several people complied, and the photos they shared give us a good idea of what happens to Jet Black iPhones when they're in your hands as opposed to being featured in photos on Apple's website. Reddit user KateWalls shared the highest-quality photos in the thread, and you can see plenty of fine scratching on her Jet Black iPhone 7 Plus — which is only two weeks old. She does note that in person, the scratches are more visible on the antenna bands than they are on the aluminum housing. Here are a couple of examples from her post: There's definitely plenty of scratching there but as you can see, it's much more visible at certain angles to the light. Another user named ctsikh posted one photo of his Jet Black iPhone 7, and you can clearly see some scratching. You can also see how much grease and dirt the Jet Black finish picks up — remember my tweet showing a Jet Black iPhone 7 Plus that had been handled by customers in an Apple store? Yeah. https://twitter.com/zacharye/status/778223454935982080 If those photos don't scare you, this one from Redditor polygonarsenal definitely will: He used a filter to accentuate the scratches, which look downright terrible. This is pretty much the stuff nightmares are made of. There are a bunch more photos in the thread on Reddit , so definitely check them out.
