Find your best bangs: The 5 most flattering styles

Taylor Swift's bangs

(Dan MacMedan/WireImage)

What can make a face softer but edgier at the same time? (Don't worry, this isn't some complicated riddle.) Bangs can enhance any face shape—if you wear them the right way, that is. We've rounded up five ideas with fringe benefits, along with hairstylist Nathaniel Hawkins's tips for pulling them off.

LASH-GRAZING: Taylor Swift

Trimmed to the eyelashes and angled down slightly at the temples, these bangs pack major attitude. "They add mystery and are the focus of the entire hairstyle," says Hawkins. Dramatic as it is, the horizontal line softens Swift's heart-shaped face. Since blunt fringe is heavy and adds width, it also flatters oval faces (and thick textures). Blow-dry them with a round brush.

TIP: Don't rule out bangs if you have naturally curly hair—Swift does! "Determine how smooth your hair gets when you blow-dry it before you cut anything," Hawkins says. Ask your stylist to cut your bangs while they are dry (hair stretches when it's wet), so you'll know exactly how they'll fall.

"Bangs cut above the brows are strong," Hawkins says of Stone's straight-across fringe, ideal for round or square faces. "It becomes a fashion statement." Flatironing these bangs once they're blown dry gives them edgy definition.

TIP: To avoid having your bangs cut too short, ask your stylist to trim them gradually. "A quarter of an inch too short may not matter when you're getting a haircut, but it makes a big difference with bangs," Hawkins says. "Ask your stylist to cut them longer at first and take them up in increments until you reach the perfect length."

Rachel Zoe's bangs

ARCHED : Rachel Zoe

A lighter—and more bohemian—version of Swift's lash-skimming fringe, Zoe's are trimmed with a razor in two sections: one that falls directly over the forehead, then longer layers on the sides that blend with the rest of the hair. Bonus: This style, perfect for oval faces, expertly camouflages the forehead and corners of the eyes, where many women show the first signs of aging.

TIP: Go easy on the styling products. "Style them with whatever you'd normally use on your hair but apply it to the rest of your hair first with your hands," Hawkins says. "You can use whatever's left on your bangs." If you're using a shine spray, mist it on your brush first and then comb through.

Zooey Deschanel's bangs

PARTED : Zooey Deschanel

Another way to wear bangs? Parted down the middle like Deschanel does: It keeps hair out of the way but still draws attention to her insanely blue eyes. "With the contrast of her dark hair color, it actually makes them look more blue," Hawkins says. Curtain bangs like these can help make the transition to a grown-out style, too. The wispy side layers look soft and feminine, especially when the rest of the hair is swept back.

TIP: When applying rich face creams and makeup, make sure they're fully absorbed before letting your bangs down. Hawkins's trick? "To be safe, dab the forehead with a blotting tissue. You don't want the oils to transfer to your hair and make it look greasy." Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets are one of our favorites.

Debby Ryan's Bangs

SIDE-SWEPT : Debby Ryan

And of course, there are side-swept bangs. Or as Hawkins calls Ryan's take: the non-bang bangs. "This version is more like a long, sweeping layer that has the effect of bangs," he says. "It creates a vertical line where the hair starts to swoop and thins a round face."

To steal Ryan's look, ask your stylist to trim a section of hair in the front of the face so that the longest point falls above the tip of your nose; blow-dry it with a round brush and set in a pin curl for ten minutes. "With the others, the hair is falling straight down," he says. "You need to condition your hair to drape to the side, and a pin curl will set that shape."

"When I went home to speak at the opening of the International AIDS conference [in July], I stood in front of an audience of thousands and made a plea to end the deadly stigma and discrimination that puts the burden of AIDS on the world's most vulnerable people," Theron said. "It wasn't long after I gave this speech talking about how we couldn't forget the most vulnerable among us that I realized I had forgotten someone," she continued. • This photo of a dog with a mouthful of ladybugs is freaking out pet owners

The photo that Kansas veterinarian Lindsay Mitchell posted to Facebook looked so unreal and disturbing that some who saw it went right to the hoax-busting website Snopes to verify it. But that didn’t stop the photo from being shared more than 53,000 times since it went up last week. Mitchell, of Hoisington, Kan., posted a graphic picture of a dog with a mouthful of Asian lady beetles. Ladybugs aren’t so cute when 30 to 40 of them are stuck to the roof of a dog’s mouth. “This is the second pup I have seen like this today. If your pet is drooling or foaming at the mouth look for these lady bugs. They cause ulcers on the tongue and mouth and have a very painful bite,” she wrote on the Hoisington

DEAR ABBY: I have been with my wife for 16 years. She has a grown daughter who’s the mother of eight kids, but she only has five with her at this time. My problem is, the daughter got evicted, and all of a sudden she brought her belongings to the house. She didn’t ask or anything, she just showed up with the five kids and they are driving me up the wall. I already have two adolescent kids, so seven ain’t heaven. I have tried to talk with my wife, but she doesn’t listen. I’m fed up, Abby, and I’m looking for other accommodations. They have been here for two weeks and — by the way — my sons are now in school while her five are running wild in the house. Am I wrong for leaving? — NEEDS MY OWN SPACE

    • Mike Pence is safe after plane skids off LaGuardia runway (14 photos)

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, Donald Trump's running mate, was unharmed when the plane he was riding in slid off the runway while landing on a rain-soaked Thursday evening at New York City's LaGuardia Airport, briefly prompting its closure. Turbulent weather was credited for a bumpy approach that caused the Boeing 737 Eastern Airlines charter flight's rough landing. The Associated Press reported that the pilot slammed on the brakes, and passengers reported smelling rubber after the jet came to a halt. Several on board noted a fishtail effect after the plane made contact with the runway. When Donald Trump made his strange trip to a Hindu anti-terrorism rally in Edison, New Jersey, Chris Christie — the governor who is heading Trump’s transition team — was noticeably absent. Garden State leaders could only wonder whether Christie was laying low because of the unpopular presidential nominee's hot-mic comments about women, or because of his own deepening problems stemming from the Bridgegate scandal. Such is the condition of Christie’s career. Once a GOP star, his fortunes have plummeted since the high point of his landslide re-election in 2013, and now look to be nearing rock-bottom as an aide’s trial leads to embarrassing revelations about his possible complicity in the notorious lane closures at the George Washington Bridge.

    • 2 reasons Friday's great GDP report kind of stinks

Neil Dutta, an economist at Renaissance Macro, notes these are the “most volatile” components of the report, adding that taking out these elements yields annualized GDP growth of just 1.4%. A middling increase in personal consumption during the third quarter adds credence to the idea that Friday’s GDP number wasn’t a marked change in direction for the economy, but a reinforcement of the idea that the US is basically a 2% economy right now. Personal consumption rose at a rate of 2.1% in the third quarter, roughly in-line with the broader growth trend we’ve seen since the financial crisis but well below the 4.3% expansion we saw during the second quarter.
