Domino’s Brazil tests DVDs that smell like pizza

Yahoo Shopping

The marketers who work for Domino's Pizza in Brazil must know that when selling pizzas, the nose can be a powerful ally.

Domino's in Brazil partnered with 10 DVD-rental stores to rent discs that, when played in a DVD player, come out smelling like a pizza, AdAge.com reports. As the movie plays, the customer is apparently none the wiser. But when the movie is over and the customer hits eject, a pizzalike odor wafts into the room.

A special thermal ink on the DVD reacts to the heat of the DVD player, not only releasing the odor but also causing a picture of a pizza to appear on top of the disc. A message reads: "Did you enjoy the movie? The next one will be even better with a hot and delicious Domino's Pizza." In the pizza business, subtlety gets you nowhere.

While streaming is all the rage in the United States, AdAge.com reports discs are far more popular in Brazil.

Via AdAge.com:

In this age of streaming video, the idea might seem a bit anachronistic. However, "in Brazil streaming services like Netflix and iTunes are relatively new, and for people with good social conditions," said ArtPlan art director Diogo Barbosa. "Also our broadband connection isn't as fast as that used in the U.S., and because of that we still have video rental stores in your neighborhoods."

This is the latest in a series of unusual marketing moves in Brazil. Last week, we reported about Huggies Brazil testing a Twitter-enabled diaper accessory. If your kid pees, you get an alert on Twitter (yay?). And last month, Budweiser Brazil revealed that it is testing a Facebook-enabled glass called a "Buddy Cup." When two Buddy Cup-holding drinkers toast each other by clinking their glasses, they become Facebook friends.

In the wake of ESPN’s mass firings, news of which continued into Thursday, some joked that it might be easier to list network employees who weren’t fired. Others took the next step by pointing out certain ESPN figures who they would have preferred to see laid off. Given that Stephen A. Smith is arguably ESPN’s best-known personality and, less arguably, its most polarizing, it was inevitable that his would be a prominent name pointed out by those arguing that, if the network had to let some people go, he should have been among them. On his ESPN radio show Thursday, Smith took issue with one source of criticism in particular: Jeff Pearlman, an author and former writer for Sports Illustrated and ESPN.

    • Dangerous brown recluse spiders found in family's garage

A family in Michigan is scratching their heads after discovering unusual tenants inside their garage last week. On the floor of their unheated, detached garage in Davison, they spotted two long-legged spiders, which turned out to be brown recluse spiders -- a dangerous type of spider with a powerful bite. Most bites are minor, but occasionally, skin around a brown recluse bite will become necrotic, turning a dark color and becoming a deep, open sore as it dies. The family has no idea where the spiders with 3- to 5-inch-long legs came from or how they made their way into their garage. Howard Russell, an entomologist at Michigan State University Diagnostic Services, confirmed the spiders were,

    • Even Donald Trump's birthday tweet to Melania has a factual error it in

Our Tweeter in Chief Donald Trump, is known for playing fast and loose with facts, but you'd think a birthday message to his wife would be a nice softball. He can garner a few awws and then move on.  Nope. SEE ALSO: The only Melania in the White House is this photograph On Wednesday, Melania Trump celebrated her birthday. And like most loved ones do on their spouse's birthday, Donald Trump took to Twitter to send his best wishes to his wife. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our @FLOTUS, Melania! https://t.co/rYYp51mxDQ pic.twitter.com/np7KYHglSv — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 26, 2017 However, when it came to the graphics, there was a ball drop. Or a star drop, if you will. If you look closely you'll notice that the flag in that graphics package only has 39 stars, which leaves out quite a number of states.  And because nothing escapes the internet, Twitter definitely noticed. There are only 39 stars on that flag, sir. https://t.co/KATgoLIQUv — Dan Zak (@MrDanZak) April 27, 2017 This is so weird: The American flag on @FLOTUS Melania Trump's birthday card only has 39 stars. H/t: @eventsforgood pic.twitter.com/IYd2hdOXGJ — Christina Wilkie (@christinawilkie) April 27, 2017 Very weird. Since the 39 star flag was never official since we went from 38 to 42 states in 1890. https://t.co/TG5JWAPOA3 — MyNinjaTurtle (@MyNinjaTurtle) April 27, 2017 @chrislhayes Wonder which 11 states are slated for destruction? #39StarFlag pic.twitter.com/KKkIS1ElZB — kathy greenstone (@KathyGreenstone) April 27, 2017 To make matters even more worse, this is not the first time Donald Trump has shared the 39-star flag. As MSNBC's Chris Hayes pointed out, Donald Trump also shared the flag at the end of the video welcoming freed Egyptian American Aya Hijazi who was imprisoned in Cairo. @christinawilkie @FLOTUS @eventsforgood IT'S THE SAME FLAG IN THE END OF THIS VIDEO!!!! https://t.co/jZOSS7VjNh — Christopher Hayes (@chrislhayes) April 27, 2017 Someone in the WH graphics operation has a 39-star flag saved on their computer as the current flag and is using it everything! — Christopher Hayes (@chrislhayes) April 27, 2017 For reference, Mr. President, we've never actually had a 39-star flag in the history of the United States.  The design was actually created in 1889 when flag makers were anticipating the addition of the Dakotas to the United states. Flag makers incorrectly assumed that what we know as North Dakota and South Dakota would be admitted to the US as only one state, not two. The New York Times notes:  Long story short, flag makers jumped the gun, so now 39-star flag was never an official flag. They are now just collectors items. Note: there was never an official 39-star flag, but some folks thought there would be 39 states in 1889, so some flags were actually created — Brian Ruh (@brianruh) September 5, 2016 WE NEVER EVEN HAD A 39 STAR FLAG https://t.co/XpMS0LMd97 — SheriffFruitfly (@sherifffruitfly) April 27, 2017 Now, to be fair, this is probably just a graphic design mistake from the White House art department, not a comment on how many states Trump wishes we had. But the fact stands: The. President. Of. The. United. States. Tweeted. A. Fake. Flag. Happy Birthday, Melania!

United Airlines has announced sweeping changes on how it "respects its customers" following the infamous moment when a passenger was forcibly dragged off an overbooked flight. • Mom lets daughter's school know her 10-year-old is 'done' with homework

Making tough calls for your children is a vital aspect of parenting. One brave mother stepped up to the parenting plate for her child, sharing an email she sent to her daughter's school explaining that her 10 year old is "done with homework" because of the undue stress it causes. SEE ALSO: Instead of telling women who might get pregnant they can't drink, study suggests trusting them Bunmi Laditan, a mom blogger in Quebec, explained on Facebook that she told her daughter's school that her child would be "drastically reducing" the homework she'd be completing, but that she "was trying to be polite because [her daughter is] finished." “I just sent an email to her school letting her know she’s all done,” the mother wrote. "Over the past four years I've noticed her getting more and more stressed when it comes to school," the troubled mother wrote, "And by stressed I mean chest pains, waking up early, and dreading school in general." Laditan explained that her daughter often does homework until 6:30 p.m., with little to no time to relax after dinner. “Is family time not important?” she wrote, “Is time spent just being a child relaxing at home not important? Or should she become some kind of junior workaholic at 10 years old?" “Children need downtime after school the same way adults need downtime after work. They need to play with their siblings," she continued. Laditan later commented on her own post to further explain her point of view. Image: bunmi laditan/facebookThe mother clarified that she wasn’t blaming her daughter’s "incredible" teachers, and that she simply feels the system isn’t working for her child. “I can’t watch her unravel anymore and be filled with so much stress at age 10,” she explained. Parents, teachers, and even therapists sounded off in the post's comment section in support of Laditan, relating similar experiences with children in their own lives.
