Whether you're crafting cocktails or just throwing back shots, don't break the bank this Cinco de Mayo. There's nothing "Spring Break" about these five tequilas but the price.

1. Milagro Silver Tequila
$24

Yes, the bottle looks like a Cancun airport souvenir, but this is one of the best values in tequila—period. The sweetness and smoothness of Milagro's blue agave is balanced by a lively, citrusy finish.

Try it: Instead of vodka in a Bloody Mary, perhaps on Seis de Mayo.

2. Espolón Reposado and Blanco Tequila
$24 each

What do you get when you produce two spot-on tequilas and price them both under $25? You get two bottles on this list. Buy a split case of the reposado and blanco before they wise up and raise the price.

In Case You Noticed: Yes, this is the same award-winning Espolón tequila that disappeared from U.S. liquor stores three years ago.

3. El Jimador Tequila Blanco
$22

In Mexico, where they know a thing or two about distilled agave, no tequila outsells el Jimador. The blanco is perfect for cocktails, and if someone insists on shots, you could do much, much worse.

Get It: You can find El Jimador (along with every bottle on this list) at Astor Wines and Spirits. Yes, they ship.

4. Gran Centenario Tenampa Azul Reposado Tequila
$21

A bargain reposado? Yes, because in addition to that awesome name, Gran Centenario Tenampa Azul Reposado has more citrus, smoke, and smoothness than you have any right to expect at this price.

Try It: In a glass of prosecco with a segment of fresh grapefruit as a garnish. Trust us on this one.

Widely available, always reliable, and perfect for mixing thanks to its potent proof and punchy sweetness that won't get lost in your margarita.

Form and Function: That fancy bottle top doubles as a shot measure.

    • The hidden reason Republicans are so eager to repeal Obamacare

There is one fact that is both central to the debate over repealing the Affordable Care Act yet strangely absent from explicit discussion about it. One of the main ways the ACA makes health insurance affordable is by providing families earning less than 400 percent of the poverty line (i.e., less than $85,000 for a family of three or less than $47,550 for a single person) with tax credits to defray the cost of purchasing insurance. President Obama and the congressional Democrats who wrote the law didn’t find the money for those subsidies hidden in a banana stand — they did what Democrats like to do when paying for things and raised taxes on affluent families.

    • Something in space is killing off entire galaxies

When we think about the survival of the human race we often focus on making sure our planet stays alive and habitable, but out there in the depths of space there are entire galaxies being killed off in a manner that is utterly perplexing scientists. A new paper ( PDF ) from researchers working at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research addresses the odd and extremely troubling trend and attempts to propose an answer for what exactly is leading literally thousands of galaxies to die premature deaths. After studying a whopping 11,000 galaxies in the general vicinity of our own, scientists now believe that a process called ram-pressure stripping is leading the ailing galaxies to be purged of their gas, preventing new stars from forming and leading them to sputter out far faster than would be expected. Without adequate gas to power new star formation, the galaxies simply get cold and die. “During their lifetimes, galaxies can inhabit halos of different sizes, ranging from masses typical of our own Milky Way to halos thousands of times more massive,” Toby Brown, the PhD candidate who headed the study, explains on the organization's website. “As galaxies fall through these larger halos, the superheated intergalactic plasma between them removes their gas in a fast-acting process called ram-pressure stripping." “You can think of it like a giant cosmic broom that comes through and physically sweeps the gas from the galaxies," Brown says. “If you remove the fuel for star formation then you effectively kill the galaxy and turn it into a dead object.” It's a disturbing notion, but there's good(ish) news; the process can take tens of millions of years to actually occur, so even if you were living in a galaxy where ram-pressure stripping was occurring, you'd be long dead before it could actually affect you in any way. That's reassuring... right?
