Before you commit to buying your new go-to nail polish color of the season, see which ones stayed shiny and chip-free in the Good Housekeeping test.

Overall Winner

Essie Nail Color (Starting at $6; Yahoo! Shopping)

This standout pulled top points for shine and also did well in five other categories.

"It was easy to apply and looked shiny and bright throughout the time I wore it," said a volunteer. Our manicurist gave it perfect scores for how evenly it went on, while many women loved that it came off easily without staining their nails.

Maybelline New York Color Show

Longest-Lasting

Maybelline New York Color Show ($3; walmart.com)

Volunteers reported that this bargain pick stayed put for an impressive six and a half days on average.

"I'm very hard on my hands — gardening, playing sports, scrubbing pots — but the polish stayed perfectly on my nails as if it were the first day," raved one.

OPI Nail Lacquer

J Muckle / Studio D

Quickest-Drying

OPI Nail Lacquer (Starting at $8; Yahoo! Shopping)

This speed demon was way ahead of the competition when it came to drying time, besting the runner-up by almost a minute and a half on average.

Women also loved the classic red shade Big Apple Red, one of the brand's best sellers.

CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss

J Muckle / Studio D

Most Chip-Proof

CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss ($4, 45 shades; drugstore.com)

In-lab and at-home testers rated this newbie — the only winner with a built-in base and top coat — best chip-defier, and its staying power nearly matched Maybelline's: "It was long-lasting and never chipped," noted one pleased tester.

How we tested

Lawrence J Whritenour Jr.

How We Tested

First, we sent the 10 best-selling nail polishes (185 bottles total) to women nationwide. They applied two coats of color — each brand's best-selling non-shimmery red shade — without a base or top coat, then reported back on how shiny the polish was, how quickly their manicure chipped, how many days they left it on, and more.

The top six performers were then tested in the GHRI lab on another set of panelists. A professional manicurist applied polish to the nails of 60 women, this time to evaluate shine and determine drying speed — and find out if it varied with color. (We compared reds with each brand's best-selling nude shade.)

Our testers weighed in on shine, wear, and chip-resistance.

The ship's crew were thrown about, some over distances of 20 feet, and the majority of the 137-member crew suffered one injury or another—including one that would later prove fatal. Further inspection would explain what happened, and reveal that the submarine's bow looked like a crushed soda can. USS San Francisco had run into an undersea mountain. On that day, January 8, 2005, the San Francisco had been approximately 360 miles southeast of Guam, traveling at flank speed (more than 30 knots). The navigational charts used by the ship's crew failed to show a seamount, or undersea mountain, protruding from

Dear Amy: I have a longtime friend who has asked our circle of five women to be "bridesmaids" for her wedding photos. She has been married to her (second) husband for years. They own a beautiful home and have two children. She had a lavish first wedding and opted for a small second wedding, to which none of us was invited. She comes from a wealthy family and her parents are buying her a new wedding dress and paying for the photographer. She wants to do this as a 40th birthday present to herself. She asked her bridesmaids to drive to her parents' ranch (a three-hour drive each way) for a vow renewal. Our children and spouses were invited. She has chosen a bridesmaids' dress that costs $100. The California mom found beaten and bloody on a highway after going missing for three weeks has skipped town with her husband — and left their two dogs behind. Sherri and Keith Papini left their home in Redding with their two kids but decided not to bring the dogs, friends said. A “buddy of Keith’s” was at the Papini home on Sundust Road on Saturday around noon — and told a Post reporter he was there to “walk the dogs.” He then took the smaller dog on a leash and said he “couldn’t answer any questions” and “I’m going to go walk her now.” He said he was there “just helping out.” A neighbor who has lived next to the Papini house, which is Keith’s childhood home, and has known him since he was 5

Tales of harassment against anyone who dares cross the religion—even IRS agents responsible for determining the organization’s tax exempt status—are commonplace. Because of the “religion’s” famous litigiousness, as well as the willingness of its strongmen to intimidate those who speak out, tales of abuse were slow to emerge for its first few decades. • Jayson Williams calls himself 'a coward' for his role in his limo driver's 2002 shooting, coverup

It has nearly been 15 years since Costas “Gus” Christofi, a limousine driver working to shepherd former NBA All-Star Jayson Williams and his litany of friends around for a wild night out, was accidentally shot to death in Williams’ New Jersey estate. After a series of deadlocked juries and retrials Williams later pled guilty to aggravated assault in the rifle death in 2010, and the former Nets center was found guilty on four counts of attempting to cover up his role in Christofi’s death. Williams, free since 2012 and working with an alcohol problem prior to Christofi’s death, is clearly still working through the aftermath after all but abandoning the post-NBA career that seemed so expertly laid out for him.
