Before you commit to buying your new go-to nail polish color of the season, see which ones stayed shiny and chip-free in the Good Housekeeping test.

Overall Winner

Essie Nail Color (Starting at $6; Yahoo! Shopping)

This standout pulled top points for shine and also did well in five other categories.

"It was easy to apply and looked shiny and bright throughout the time I wore it," said a volunteer. Our manicurist gave it perfect scores for how evenly it went on, while many women loved that it came off easily without staining their nails.

Maybelline New York Color Show

J Muckle / Studio D

Longest-Lasting

Maybelline New York Color Show ($3; walmart.com)

Volunteers reported that this bargain pick stayed put for an impressive six and a half days on average.

"I'm very hard on my hands — gardening, playing sports, scrubbing pots — but the polish stayed perfectly on my nails as if it were the first day," raved one.

OPI Nail Lacquer

J Muckle / Studio D

Quickest-Drying

OPI Nail Lacquer (Starting at $8; Yahoo! Shopping)

This speed demon was way ahead of the competition when it came to drying time, besting the runner-up by almost a minute and a half on average.

Women also loved the classic red shade Big Apple Red, one of the brand's best sellers.

CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss

J Muckle / Studio D

Most Chip-Proof

CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss ($4, 45 shades; drugstore.com)

In-lab and at-home testers rated this newbie — the only winner with a built-in base and top coat — best chip-defier, and its staying power nearly matched Maybelline's: "It was long-lasting and never chipped," noted one pleased tester.

How we tested

Lawrence J Whritenour Jr.

How We Tested

First, we sent the 10 best-selling nail polishes (185 bottles total) to women nationwide. They applied two coats of color — each brand's best-selling non-shimmery red shade — without a base or top coat, then reported back on how shiny the polish was, how quickly their manicure chipped, how many days they left it on, and more.

The top six performers were then tested in the GHRI lab on another set of panelists. A professional manicurist applied polish to the nails of 60 women, this time to evaluate shine and determine drying speed — and find out if it varied with color. (We compared reds with each brand's best-selling nude shade.)

Our testers weighed in on shine, wear, and chip-resistance.

Julie Bowen has come under fire for her comments about Barron Trump. Julie Bowen made Donald Trump’s inauguration more fun to watch, but not everyone appreciated her witty banter. • Does an injured James Harrison mean more Jarvis Jones vs the Patriots?

If you haven’t figured it out from the headline, the Pittsburgh Steelers might have a small problem at outside linebacker. The official injury report came out on Friday and James Harrison was officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots. This could be extraordinarily bad news for the Steelers. The reason this is such a concern is that Harrison has been entrenched as the team’s starter since Week 11 and is putting together one of the best seasons of his career. The 38-year old, 14-year veteran is paired up with Bud Dupree and the two of them have been creating havoc ever since. But if Harrison is limited, that could be a big bump in reps for Jarvis Jones.

    • Trump's first executive action: Cancel Obama's mortgage premium cuts

WASHINGTON — The very first executive action by the new Trump administration wasn't a sweeping order on immigration, trade or health care — but rather to block an Obama administration that would have reduced the cost of mortgages for millions of home buyers. In the first hour of Trump's presidency, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development sent a letter to lenders, real estate brokers and closing agents suspending the 0.25 percentage point premium rate cut for Federal Housing Administration-backed loans. That cut would have saved home buyers about $29 a month on a $200,000 mortgage. But Republicans cast the move as hasty and said it threatened to undermine the stability of the system.

    • Karen Gillan Swears There’s A Reason For Her Skimpy Jumanji Costume

This isn't the first time that Karen Gillan has had to defend the Jumanji wardrobe. While it's difficult to know for sure why the costume exists, there does seem to be one compelling argument based on what we already know. We know that this new version of Jumanji will not take place around a board game, but rather inside a video game version of the title. The four main actors that we see are, from what we understand, avatars being controlled, or more likely, inhabited, by four teenagers who are playing the game. It's for this reason that Karen Gillan looks like an old school Lara Croft, because that's exactly the character trope that it is being represented here.

    • President Trump’s Inauguration Crowd Doesn’t Look Like Barack Obama’s Did in 2009

A side-by-side comparison of the crowds at former President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump‘s respective inaugurations reveals that Trump’s crowd isn’t as large as he boasted it would be. Two aerial photographs of the National Mall from the two historic days reveal large patches of white ground exposed during Trump’s ceremony, spaces crowds had filled during Obama’s 2009 inauguration. Federal and local agencies estimated 700,000 to 900,000 people would be in Washington, D.C. for Trump’s inauguration on Friday, roughly half the number of people who attended Obama’s first presidential inauguration.

Before news broke Friday that AT&T has stopped bleeding TV customers, Parks Associates analyst Brett Sappington tried to put a finger on what sort of subscriber numbers for the company’s new streaming TV service would warrant such a disclosure. “If it goes gangbusters and they end up with over 100,000, 200,000, 300,000 – if they end up with those kinds of figures – I think there’s a decent possibility they announce specific numbers,” he told the Dallas Business Journal. Apparently, DirecTV Now has gone gangbusters.
