How We Tested

Our beauty lab checked the temperatures of 18 one-inch-wide flat irons, disqualifying any that either never reached their maximum or exceeded it (some did — by 40°F!). Irons that broke when drop-tested also got the boot. We evaluated the remaining 11, straightening frizzy, wavy hair swatches and putting them in a high-humidity, climate-controlled room. Testers also used the irons at home, rating how well they worked.

    • Steelers get 'emergency wake-up call' at 3 a.m.

Observer-Reporter writer and Steelers pregame show host Dale Lolley has been around the beat long enough to know shenanigans when he sees them. While he doesn’t exactly define what an “emergency wake-up call” is, it probably isn’t the kind that has the hotel’s front desk calling and asking whether his refrigerator was running. One person on the scene says a fire alarm was pulled, suggesting Darth Belichick might not have been involved. Considering his pregame gig, Lolley is probably staying at the hotel of the alleged incident, so it’s believable. One has to wonder whether the hotel took it upon himself to rock the Steelers out of a restful night’s sleep, or whether the Patriots themselves had

When Kevon Smith Sr. sat down for breakfast at Cracker Barrel with his son Kevon Jr. in Willoughby, OH, he had no idea he was going to make headlines just for being a good dad. Kevon noticed a couple staring and smiling at him and his 3-month-old son, and although he was confused, he just went on with the meal. "I noticed this older couple over in the corner," he said. "They kept smiling at me and I was looking at my son like, 'What is going on?'" But when Kevon left the restaurant, it all made sense, as he saw a note on his car from the couple praising his parenting along with cash to cover his breakfast. "Today your meal is on my wife and me," it read. "Enjoy that baby as long as God intends.

    • Husband sends marriage to the dogs

Dear Amy: Shortly after my husband and I began dating, he bought a large-breed puppy. He took the dog everywhere he went. We then moved in together, we got another small, mixed-breed dog that we hoped would keep the large dog busy, since he was always demanding my husband's attention. One evening, the large dog snapped at me (he was 6 years old at this point). My husband was very upset, and he was going to put him down, for fear that he had "turned." I begged him not to. About four months later, the large dog growled at me, and my husband took him to the pen outside. While outside, the dog bit my husband several times, so he was put down. My husband now wants to get another dog of the same breed

McAfee has been in Indianapolis since 2009, so he’s seen the inner workings of this organization before and during the Grigson years.
