Energy bars play a number of roles in an athlete’s life. Sometimes we reach for them during hard workouts, sometimes as on-the-go meal replacements, and sometimes simply because we’re out of vitamin-infused gummy bears and need to convince ourselves we’ve chosen a snack with nutrients.

But these days there are so many different energy bar varieties that the choosy athlete finds herself at a crossroads: Which portable power choice will give me the most energy without tasting like a chemical spill?

In the interest of science, I assembled a crack team of energy-starved guinea pigs for a blind taste test to separate the power wheat from the power chaff. We dove deep into the catalogues of Clif and Larabar to see which bars taste like mouthwatering cake, and which bars you’d bribe a dog to bury in the back yard.

Out of a 15-bar sampling of top sellers, here are our top six energy bars—and the one bar whose name we dare not speak (but we’re A-OK with writing it out).

1. Clif Mojo Honey Roasted Peanut (Score: 9.75/10)

This crunchy delight (pictured above) was the clear winner. Tasters said, “The sweet and salty taste sensations came at my mouth like gangbusters!” And who could screw up peanuts and honey? Not Clif, apparently.

2. Snickers Marathon Energy Chewy Chocolatey Peanut (Score: 9/10)

Arguably healthier than Clif, Snickers Marathon Energy was nonetheless cheerfully rated and described as crunchy, not too sweet and chocolate and nuts marries energy; this hit me in the spot reserved for tasty afterthoughts.

3. Kind Blueberry Pecan + Fiber (Score: 8/10)

This energy bar is about as straightforward as a kick in the mouth (a delicious one, mind you). The simplicity of 10 simple ingredients shines through after the barrage of soy and whey-protein laden bars. The tasters gave the balance of fruit, nuts and honey five stars.

Calories: 190, Fat: 12g, Carb: 20g, Sugar: 9g, Fiber: 5g, Protein: 4g

4. Kashi Go Lean Crunchy Chocolate Almond

(Score 7.75/10)

Tasters gushed over the combination of simple flavors (Chocolate and almonds? Yes, please!) and the crunchy, crispy texture. One comment about the "delightful lightness" of the crispy rice base received rousing affirmation from the other tasters.

5. Clif Carrot Cake (Score: 7/10)

Tasters liked the spice and thought the bar was a good replica of carrot cake without icing, but were puzzled by the conflicting textures and questioned the value of a world without cream cheese icing.

Calories: 240, Fat: 4.5g, Carb: 44g, Sugar: 25g, Fiber: 5g, Protein: 9g

6. Kashi Go Lean Roll Caramel Peanut (Score: 7/10)

This reminded most tasters of a delicious, crunchy salted nut roll, though one confessed (somewhat dramatically) to feeling betrayed and assaulted by the mismatch of sweetness and peanuts.

The Worst Energy Bar: SoyJoy Berry
(Score: 3/10)

This bar served as a bready affront to all taste sensibilities and inspired reviewers to pen angry screeds on various holes it should be jammed into and/or buried. No amount of energy in the world is worth another bite of this hateful, berry monstrosity, one ranted, while another simply scrawled, Soft. Ugly. Offensive.

    • Hmm, maybe this is why Trump doesn't want to attend the White House Correspondents' Dinner

On Saturday, Donald Trump made history as only the third president to bow out of the White House Correspondents' Dinner. And while this has much to do with Trump's ever-worsening battle with the press and his constant struggle to book talent, it's also worth remembering that, to be frank, Trump probably has another reason for ditching: He usually gets clobbered at these things. So, in the interest of, uh, elucidation, please enjoy these videos of Trump getting roasted at the 2011 and 2016 White House Correspondents' Dinner. Better yet, enjoy Trump's mirthless reactions. They're uncomfortable to watch, but extremely worth it. SEE ALSO: An exclusive look at Donald Trump's Twitter drafts for Oscar night First, here's President Obama clapping back at Trump's relentless "birther" conspiracy-mongering. The Lion King is involved. Next, observe Seth Meyers insisting that Trump must be running for president as a "joke." Trump does not smile. And here's Obama ripping on The Apprentice.  Finally, here's a delightful compilation of all the best Trump burns from the 2016 dinner.  A Larry Wilmore highlight: "Yeah, Trump's campaign is inspiring ... mass violence." (Trump did not attend that one, BTW.) So, there you have it. While we're not sure about the future of this year's event, we'll always have those stunners to fall back on.  And you can always zoom in on this cursed image while listening to "Sound of Silence." • Jerk alligator steals a huge fish off a little boy's line

Today, a little boy named Connor learned the brutal lesson that Mother Nature has no manners. In a clip posted to the Bass Masters And Fish Experts Facebook Page, a thieving alligator had an easy lunch thanks to some humans fishing off a pier. In the clip, a young boy hooks a pretty sizable fish, and as one man encourages the boy to reel in the fish all on his own, another spots an alligator lurking near the pier. The man tries to distract the gator by hitting the side of the pier with his arm, but the reptile was determined to get its eats. "You need to cut your line," one the of the men tells the little boy as the gator swims away with his catch.  Although it's unclear where the incident occurred, many commenters insisted it happened in Florida.  [h/t: UPI ] BONUS: Giant nets harvest fog to solve water crisis in Morocco

    • Transgender wrestler wins Texas championship for girls

(Reuters) - Mack Beggs, a 17-year-old high school wrestler who is transitioning from female to male, took home gold in the 110-weight class of the Texas girls state championship after the state refused to allow the student to compete against boys. The University Interscholastic League, which governs school sports in Texas, said the state's education code allows the use of a banned drug such as steroids if it "is prescribed by a medical practitioner for a valid medical purpose." Beggs' win came days after the Trump administration revoked landmark guidance to public schools letting transgender students use the bathrooms of their choice, reversing a signature initiative of former Democratic President Barack Obama. Beggs, a junior at Trinity High School in the Dallas suburb of Euless, had a 52-0 record ahead of the weekend tournament and was favored to win the high school championship in his weight class.
