Makeup for one dollar

(Makeup you can buy for a dollar)

From pencils to palettes and tubes, department store makeup can easily cost $30 a pop. It’s safe to say we all want quality cosmetics for less, so here to help us out is our friend and beauty expert Nicole Williams, She’s got a huge spread here of fantastic best beauty buys for, get this, a dollar – sometimes even less.

“The misconception is that these dollar brands are not as good and that they’re only made for teenagers or kids. It’s not so,” Williams says. “I use these for my celebrity clients. I use these on everyday women. These products are great.”

One of Williams’ favorite brands is elf Cosmetics, E.L.F. being an acronym for eyes lips and face.

“There are no parabens, no chemicals and no preservatives. It’s mostly a dollar so you’re really saving,” Williams says. “Even if you buy in bulk with them, if you get more than one product because sometimes they’re in kits, you end up saving anyway.” Williams is a big fan of E.L.F.’s Shimmer Eyeliner Pencil. She says what’s great about it is that the sharpener is right on the cap. “Two in one, easy, 99 cents.”

Jordana is another brand you’ll see at the dollar or drugstore, specifically at Walgreens or online at “The [products] are just so pigmented, beautiful, rich in color and really easy to apply,” Williams says. “They’re owned by Milani. A lot of people don’t know that. Milani is like a big sister, a little more high-end in this collection. What’s great about Jordana is you can find a lot of price points here for a dollar.”

Next is Wet N Wild, which many women grew up with. Williams says in many ways the brand is sort of the originator of the dollar cosmetics phenomenon.

“I love all of their products. They have two lip liners. One is just a basic formulation and the other one is a creamier formula. So that way, if you have a drier lip or drier skin, it’ll really work,” Wiliams says. “Their color Brandywine is universal, so you can use it on pretty much any skin tone. Also, if you add just a couple more dollars you can get eyeshadows.”

Another brand, New York Color, gets rave reviews despite its low price points. Williams admits to being a fan of the brand for its Ultra Moist Lipwear. She says the packaging is chic, speaks to trendsetters and, at 99 cent, is a steal. “They also have mascara that retails for only $1.99 but you know, if you spend that extra buck it’s just two dollars. That’s a really great buy for a mascara,” she says.

L.A. Colors is this brand that’s been around for a long time as well,” says Williams. “They have some really great products you can get that may have been discontinued from the line, but you can find at the dollar store.”

When it comes to dollar store shopping, she says don’t just stop at picking up sponges, brushes and cotton swabs. You can also snag quality cosmetics. “One of my favorite places to shop is called the Dollar Tree,” Williams says. “You can also go online and find really great products from L.A. Colors and other lines as well.”

Finally, one of Williams’ pro tips is to check out wholesale retailers, one of her favorite being Nicka K Cosmetics. It’s a pro-retailer where many makeup artists buy in bulk but where the public can also buy individual items, especially online. Place an order at and add promo code “Nicole” and get a free NK Lip Gloss.
