The Best BBQ Sauces

Consumer Reports
From Left to Right: Stubb's Original, Archer Farms
Texas Style (Target), Emeril's Original BAM!B-Q
and Great Value Original (Wal-Mart).

Barbecue sauce might remind you of lazy weekends, but tasting sauces was serious business for our trained panelists.

To recognize the varied flavors they might find, tasters first spent three days sampling everything from a tamarind-flavored soft drink to old herbs, from orange marmalade to liquid smoke. They then tasted each of 10 sauces three ways: straight up, on chicken tenders coated in sauce and broiled, and on chicken thighs cooked with sauce in a slow cooker for at least 4 hours. Ratings were based on the toughest test, how the sauces tasted straight up.

The verdict: Five sauces were Very Good overall.

Taste

The best sauces all have complex flavors, though they tasted somewhat different, as the ratings below show. Stubb's was tangy; Archer Farms and Great Value were smoky; Emeril's had a hint of cumin and celery-seed flavor; and KC Masterpiece was sweet with a lingering spicy heat.

When cooked with meat, most of the sauces became more mellow, and their flavor improved, but not all were equally versatile. Stubbs, for example, tasted best as a condiment or when basted on meat cooked quickly, since it tends to lose flavor during slow cooking. Archer Farms, Great Value, Emeril's, and KC Masterpiece tasted equally good however they were used.

The rest of the sauces were decent but had drawbacks that included an ashy flavor, a gelatinous texture, or excessive sweetness.

Nutrition

Pour with a light hand. Per 2-tablespoon serving, these sauces have 30 to 70 calories, 4 to 16 grams of sugars, and 100 to 460 milligrams of sodium. The good news: They have no fat.

Bottom line

Check the taste comments for the Very Good sauces and choose one that appeals to you. The top three cost more than 20 cents per serving ($3.22 to $3.99 for a 16- or 18-ounce container), but Walmart's Great Value Original is just 8 cents per serving ($1.20 for 18 ounces). High price doesn't mean high quality: The priciest sauce, Bone Suckin', lacked complexity and was extremely sweet.

Consumer Reports Ratings

Very Good :

Stubb's Original
Tangy, spicy, touch of smoke, thinner than most. Best as end-of-cooking baste or condiment.

Archer Farms Texas Style (Target)
Smoky, spicy with lingering heat and a splash of cider vinegar.

Emeril's Original BAM!B-Q
Cumin and celery-seed flavors. Just a bit sweet, a touch of smoke.

• Great Value Original (Wal-Mart)
Very thick, smoky.

KC Masterpiece Original
Very thick, spicy, smoky and quite sweet with lingering heat.

Good :

Bull's Eye Original
Gelatinous texture, ashy flavor. Better cooked than as a condiment.

Sweet Baby Ray's Original
Very thick, gelatinous, with sweet fruity flavor that becomes even sweeter in slow cooking, and lingering heat.

Bone Suckin' Sauce Thicker Style
Sweetest of all, with a tomatoey, fruity and honey flavor with crunchy bits.

Kraft Original
Very thick and gelatinous with ashy flavor. Better in slow cooking than as dip or baste.

Jack Daniel's Original No. 7 Recipe
Gelatinous. Ashy smoke overwhelms much of the flavor. Cooking doesn't help much.

    • That Viral Video of a Man Punching a Kangaroo Actually Has a Sad Backstory

Video of an Australian man boxing a kangaroo to save his dog went viral last week, but there is more to the story than meets the eye. Greig Tonkins and his pals were on a boar hunting trip with their friend Kailem Barwick, a 19-year-old who was diagnosed with terminal cancer, hoping to catch an elusive "tonner"—a wild boar that weighs more than 100 kilograms (around 220 pounds), the Daily Mail reported. This Guy Punched a Kangaroo In Face to Save a Dog During the trip, one of the dogs ran into a kangaroo while chasing a scent. Tonkins quickly ran to the dog's aide and intervened, first distracting the kangaroo and causing it to release the dog from a headlock. Thankfully the dog was wearing protective

    • Russia intervened to help Trump win election: intelligence officials

By John Walcott WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. intelligence analysts have concluded that Russia intervened in the 2016 election to help President-elect Donald Trump win the White House, and not just to undermine confidence in the U.S. electoral system, a senior U.S. official said on Friday. U.S. intelligence agencies have assessed that as the 2016 presidential campaign progressed, Russian government officials devoted increasing attention to assisting Trump's effort to win the election, the U.S. official familiar with the finding told Reuters on Friday night, speaking on condition of anonymity. The president-elect's transition office released a statement that exaggerated his margin of victory and attacked the U.S. intelligence community that Trump will soon command, but did not address the analysts' conclusion.

DEAR AMY: My wife of more than 40 years and I had a mutual parting of ways five years ago. We harbor no searing animosity toward one another and we regularly talk in civil and polite tones. She thought I was going in the wrong direction, but I quickly made an effort to meet a new woman through online dating. I was successful in that venture. My ex joined many different clubs and organizations and eventually fell in with a man whose company she enjoys. Happy ending? I wish. I was happy for my ex, but women I met online told me that this guy continues to occupy a spot in the online dating scene, messaging women about his availability. It is not my business, but I’d also rather not have her contract
