6 style tips for wearing hats

A hat is not 5-inch stilettos or a crop top. Wearing one does not have to be complicated thing. Still, when stepping into the hat game either as a newbie or someone whose just been on a hat hiatus, there are some things to remember about picking out and styling hats. Six of them, precisely.

#1: You don't want to use a hat to protect your hair from rain.

It seems like a good idea until a gust of wind makes that hat fly off your head. Then you're running around in the rain, awkwardly bent over, while you chase a hat that's rolling down on the wet sidewalk. Not exactly the best way to preserve a blowout.

#2: You'll need to switch up your accessory game.

Armfuls of bracelets and some layered necklaces? Sure. But chandelier or other statement earrings make for too much going on above the neck when you're wearing a hat too.

#3: You'll want to think about that hat like it's a pair of sunglasses, and choose one that suits your face and frame.

If you've got a big jawline, for example, a cowboy hat can help balance it out with that wider brim. But if you're petite, a cowboy hat might overwhelm you. It's a little bit of trial and error, so make sure to try new styles on in front of a mirror before you commit to shopping for them online.

#4: You don't want to pack certain hats in a suitcase.

Like straw ones. You might think it's resilient cause it's not, like, a silk dress or anything, but if you sorta smush it in your weekend bag you'll likely end up with a dent in it that's hard to get out. Be gentle and cautious with those hats, or they'll lose their original shape.

#5: Finding a hat that fits isn't like finding jeans that do, but still, you'll want to pay attention when shopping online.

Most of the hats I've seen online measure 22 inches in circumfrence, but not all of them keep those standards. This one, for example, is only 21 inches, so if you've got a big noggin, it might not be for you.

#6: You'll want to choose fabrics that aren't too matchy-matchy with your outfit.

That leather baseball cap is super-cool, but maybe don't pair it with your wax-coated jeans and leather top and go for a cotton baseball cap instead. Same goes for straw hats and straw beach bags: pick one or the other.

She did so, she claimed, for administrative convenience. Yet in doing this, she violated basic constitutional principles that were erected centuries ago to prevent just what she did. On the night of the Golden Globes — as he had for many of the awards season trophy ceremonies —  actor Casey Affleck bounded onto the stage to accept his award as best lead actor in a drama for his turn in “Manchester by the Sea.” Meanwhile, Nate Parker, the multi-hyphenate lead of the Nat Turner slave revolt flick, “The Birth of a Nation,” wasn’t anywhere to be seen on the show that, 12 months prior, he was considered all but a lock to be a fixture of. The 2017 awards season was supposed to belong to both Parker and Affleck, as both of their films had stormed out of Sundance a year ago this week to positive reception with glory in their sights.  But the experiences of these two men have been

    • Miss Manners: Conserving water is not always the right solution

Dear Miss Manners: While it’s important not to waste resources, what is the proper thing to do when one flush doesn’t remove all of the waste? It seems to be wasteful to continue flushing just to be sure all is gone before the next user needs to use the facilities, but also not nice to leave anything behind. While Miss Manners does not advocate being unnecessarily wasteful — she has her limits. And that is to do whatever it takes to make a public facility reasonably hygienic after use. After all, throwing up in the toilet after seeing its previous contents will also cost an additional flush. So let us call this one even. • Mark Zuckerberg suing hundreds, seeking privacy at his Hawaii estate

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg spent $100 million on 700 acres of beachfront land on Kauai’s North Shore to create a secluded sanctuary for his family. Now, says CBS Honolulu affiliate KGMB-TV, he’s trying to ensure that privacy by suing families who might stake some claim to that land. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that Zuckerberg is filing lawsuits against a few hundred people – many living and some dead -- who inherited or once owned “kuleana lands,” which are lands passed down to the heirs of the first landowner without a will or a deed. “Close to a dozen small parcels within Zuckerberg’s Kauai estate are owned by kamaaina families who have rights to traverse the billionaire’s otherwise private domain,” the newspaper says.
