6 style tips for wearing hats

A hat is not 5-inch stilettos or a crop top. Wearing one does not have to be complicated thing. Still, when stepping into the hat game either as a newbie or someone whose just been on a hat hiatus, there are some things to remember about picking out and styling hats. Six of them, precisely.

#1: You don't want to use a hat to protect your hair from rain.

It seems like a good idea until a gust of wind makes that hat fly off your head. Then you're running around in the rain, awkwardly bent over, while you chase a hat that's rolling down on the wet sidewalk. Not exactly the best way to preserve a blowout.

#2: You'll need to switch up your accessory game.

Armfuls of bracelets and some layered necklaces? Sure. But chandelier or other statement earrings make for too much going on above the neck when you're wearing a hat too.

#3: You'll want to think about that hat like it's a pair of sunglasses, and choose one that suits your face and frame.

If you've got a big jawline, for example, a cowboy hat can help balance it out with that wider brim. But if you're petite, a cowboy hat might overwhelm you. It's a little bit of trial and error, so make sure to try new styles on in front of a mirror before you commit to shopping for them online.

#4: You don't want to pack certain hats in a suitcase.

Like straw ones. You might think it's resilient cause it's not, like, a silk dress or anything, but if you sorta smush it in your weekend bag you'll likely end up with a dent in it that's hard to get out. Be gentle and cautious with those hats, or they'll lose their original shape.

#5: Finding a hat that fits isn't like finding jeans that do, but still, you'll want to pay attention when shopping online.

Most of the hats I've seen online measure 22 inches in circumfrence, but not all of them keep those standards. This one, for example, is only 21 inches, so if you've got a big noggin, it might not be for you.

#6: You'll want to choose fabrics that aren't too matchy-matchy with your outfit.

That leather baseball cap is super-cool, but maybe don't pair it with your wax-coated jeans and leather top and go for a cotton baseball cap instead. Same goes for straw hats and straw beach bags: pick one or the other.

    • The Clinton Foundation Is Dead — But The Case Against Hillary Isn't

While everyone's been gearing up for President Trump's inauguration, the Clinton Foundation made a major announcement this week that went by with almost no notice: For all intents and purposes, it's closing its doors. In a tax filing, the Clinton Global Initiative said it's firing 22 staffers and closing its offices, a result of the gusher of foreign money that kept the foundation afloat suddenly drying up after Hillary Clinton failed to win the presidency. It proves what we've said all along: The Clinton Foundation was little more than an influence-peddling scheme to enrich the Clintons, and had little if anything to do with "charity," either overseas or in the U.S. That sound you heard starting in November was checkbooks being snapped shut in offices around the world by people who had hoped their donations would buy access to the next president of the United States. There was a strong precedent for it in Hillary Clinton's tenure as secretary of state.

    • Trump's first executive action: Cancel Obama's mortgage premium cuts

WASHINGTON — The very first executive action by the new Trump administration wasn't a sweeping order on immigration, trade or health care — but rather to block an Obama administration that would have reduced the cost of mortgages for millions of home buyers. In the first hour of Trump's presidency, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development sent a letter to lenders, real estate brokers and closing agents suspending the 0.25 percentage point premium rate cut for Federal Housing Administration-backed loans. That cut would have saved home buyers about $29 a month on a $200,000 mortgage. But Republicans cast the move as hasty and said it threatened to undermine the stability of the system.

    • Trump administration suspends FHA mortgage premium rate cut

The freshly-inaugurated Trump administration has halted a cut to the FHA mortgage insurance premium that Obama's team announced during his final days in office. The Department of Housing and Urban Development said Friday that the reduction to the annual mortgage insurance premiums borrowers pay when taking out government-backed home loans has been "suspended indefinitely." The cut, at a quarter of a percentage point, would have saved homeowners an average of $500 this year, according to the Federal Housing Administration. Borrowers with larger home loans would have seen an even bigger drop in their premium rate. The mortgage-fee reduction was orginally announced January 9 and was supposed to

    • President Trump’s Inauguration Crowd Doesn’t Look Like Barack Obama’s Did in 2009

A side-by-side comparison of the crowds at former President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump‘s respective inaugurations reveals that Trump’s crowd isn’t as large as he boasted it would be. Two aerial photographs of the National Mall from the two historic days reveal large patches of white ground exposed during Trump’s ceremony, spaces crowds had filled during Obama’s 2009 inauguration. Federal and local agencies estimated 700,000 to 900,000 people would be in Washington, D.C. for Trump’s inauguration on Friday, roughly half the number of people who attended Obama’s first presidential inauguration.
