I was only in the classroom for 45 minutes, but that was long enough to compel me to write a letter to the teacher once I left. I’ll be honest, I have zero qualifications as it relates to child education. My only qualification and reason for being in a kindergarten class that day is my oldest child is a kindergartner. He attends a public school and I was in his classroom as a parent volunteer. His teacher had asked parents to sign up to help during the daily Literacy Center portion of the morning. I was excited to go in, see my son in his classroom, and meet his classmates. When I arrived, the class was sitting on the floor, singing, and drawing the alphabet in the air with their fingers. • iPhone 7 Plus vs Google Pixel ‘bokeh’ shootout isn’t even close

Even though Apple would prefer to own the smartphone market outright, the existence and popularity of Android has positively impacted the iPhone by forcing Apple to deliver new innovations each and every year. Especially in the camera space, Apple has spent a great deal of time and money ensuring that the camera technology and performance packed into each successive iPhone model is best in class. One of the more compelling camera innovations Apple delivered last year was a new Portrait Mode feature available exclusively on the iPhone 7 Plus. With two 12 megapixel sensors -- one a wide angle lens and the other a telephoto lens -- the iPhone 7 Plus can deliver a "bokeh" effect similar to what one might see on high-end DSLR cameras. Specifically, Portrait Mode uses advanced software that artificially blurs the background of a photo while simultaneously bringing the main subject of a photo into much sharper focus. The end result, as Apple has not been shy to boast, is jaw-dropping. Not to be outdone, Google's flagship Pixel smartphone attempts to deliver a similar effect with a camera feature it calls "lens blur", though the implementation isn't exactly the same as what Apple is doing on the iPhone 7 Plus. In any event, PhoneArena recently decided to pit the iPhone 7 Plus against the Google Pixel in a battle to see which device can offer up the best bokeh effect photos. Not to spoil anything, but the competition isn't even close. While the Pixel can hold its own in some shooting situations, the iPhone 7 Plus delivered more compelling shots most of the time, as evidenced by the photo comparison below. You can check out even more examples of the iPhone 7 Plus vs Google Pixel photo standoff via the link above. Interestingly enough, though perhaps not all that surprising, the iPhone 7 Plus' camera proved to be such a hit with consumers that early demand exceeded even Apple's own optimistic expectations. Unfortunately, rumor has it that the Portrait Mode feature will remain exclusive to the 5.5-inch form factor and won't be available on Apple's 4.7-inch iPhone 8.

    • Tucker Carlson’s First Two Weeks In Primetime Outstrip Megyn Kelly On FNC

Two full weeks into hosting Fox News Channel’s 9 PM timeslot, Tucker Carlson is averaging 3.7 million viewers, 775,000 of them in the 25-54 news demo, topping CNN and MSNBC in both metrics. Tucker Carlson Tonight’s numbers also are 37% higher in viewers and up 50% in the news demo compared with the 2016 average of Megyn Kelly’s The Kelly File in the 9 PM slot. Compared with Kelly’s performance in the same two weeks last year, Carson is up 95% in the demo and 46% in overall audience. That said, the same two weeks last year did not include Donald Trump’s inauguration. But Carlson’s numbers seem to make the point that FNC has managed to transition the timeslot after Kelly’s very dramatic tenure

    • Steelers may be sending the rest of the league a message about Antonio Brown

Last week’s ominous remarks from Steelers coach Mike Tomlin may have been more than a warning to Antonio Brown; they may have been the first step in baiting the hook to trade the star receiver. “That’s often why you see great players move from team to team,” Tomlin said in the wake of Brown’s Facebook Live fiasco. “Don’t want that to happen to Antonio Brown.” Maybe Tomlin does. The recent leak to NFL Network reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala, who is embedded with the Steelers, that the team believes Brown cares too much about his statistics and that he was “pouting” after the first touchdown of Sunday’s loss to the Patriots could be regarded as a deliberate effort by the team to slide Brown toward the

    • Highly contagious stomach flu rips through US schools

They went down like dominoes in Aimee Romero’s household. First her 5-year-old daughter came home sick from school. Hours later her 8-year-old son started vomiting every 20 minutes for six hours. Next she started feeling sick. Two days later, it was her husband’s turn. The Romero family in Greentown, Ind., caught norovirus. Among the most contagious of all viruses, it is striking hard this winter, immobilizing families and even prompting schools to shut down due to student absences. The Eastern Howard School Corporation in Indiana, where Ms. Romero’s children go, closed on Tuesday after 27 percent of the elementary-school children had been out sick the prior Friday. • Get a First Look at the Palm Springs Home Where the Obamas Are Vacationing Right Now

After handing over the keys to the White House to President Trump on Friday, President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama retreated to this stunning 11,000-square-foot stucco home in the Palm Springs area of Southern California for a little time off. Built in the early 1970s by architect Howard Lapham, the home (nicknamed Icha Mayapan, or “exclusive estate”) is a standout example of Mayan Revival design, a popular midcentury style influenced by several Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes from the 1920s, including the Hollyhock and Ennis houses in Los Angeles. Its current owners, James Costos, ambassador to Spain and Angora under President Obama, and L.A.-based designer Michael S. Smith, who also redecorated the White House while the Obamas lived there, restored the home several years ago.

    • John Elway Surprised A Cab Driver Who Had Just Named The Broncos GM The Best Quarterback Ever

If there’s one thing cab drivers are opinionated about, it’s sports. Maybe it’s because they listen to sports talk radio while they’re driving around, but many cabbies (and Uber and Lyft drivers) love nothing more than asking or telling you who you think is going to win it all this year, or who’s the best at such and such. Elway and his wife were in town with mortgage magnate Glenn Stearns and his wife to attend Donald Trump’s inauguration when the Stearnses seemingly initiated a conversation about who the cab driver, named Sam Snow, thought was the best to ever throw a pigskin.
