The 10 best TVs under $1,000

Fall is what we like to call “TV watching season.” As the gloomy weather swoops in and forces us indoors, the major networks also start airing new episodes of your primetime series favorites, football gets back in full swing, and the summer blockbusters begin arriving on DVD and Blu-ray disc. All good reasons to plop down on the TV, but it doesn’t have to be an old one. Fall also happens to be a great time to buy a brand spanking new, large-screen, ultra-thin flat panel TV. In fact, if you know where to look, you can get one with all the latest features for under $1,000.

Getting a TV for under a grand isn’t the huge challenge it once was, but finding the best of the best for under $1,000 takes some pretty serious research. Luckily, we’ve done the leg work and condensed it down into a list of the top 10 TVs for under $1,000. We worked with street prices, which means all models listed below were available at press time from reputable online retailers for under $1,000. That said, the Internet has a way of changing quickly, so check these deals out soon. Also, keep in mind that, due to manufacturer’s regulations, published prices are often $100 or more than unadvertised sale prices, so be sure to click through to the merchants for the latest prices. Often, these TVs can be had for even less than you see listed here.

Sony KDL-32EX720

Starting at $750, Yahoo! Shopping

Sony KDL-32EX720

Finding a 32-inch TV under $1,000 isn’t difficult, but finding one that can match the performance of this Sony model is a tough proposition. This is Sony’s best 32-inch TV, and its picture quality shows why. The KDL-32EX720 would make a truly outstanding bedroom TV with its exceptionally thin cabinet, attractive design and rich feature set. This 1080p 3D (active 3D glasses not included) TV offers almost every premium feature including built-in Wi-Fi, Bravia Internet apps and Sony’s highly rated proprietary motion smoothing technology for judder-free pictures, no matter how fast the on-screen action is. This set is all about pure performance at a price well under $1,000.

Samsung UN40D6000 40-inch

Samsung UN40D6000 40-inch

We think this 40-inch, LED-backlit TV from Samsung is an ideal choice for bright rooms. Samsung’s “Ultra Clear” panel minimizes glare for a picture that looks great any time of day. This set also offers three USB ports for connecting to several media devices and stored movies at once. Want Wi-Fi? Just add Samsung’s “Link Stick” wireless LAN adapter to access any of the built in Samsung apps or the music and movies stored on your home network.

LG Infinia 42LV5500

LG Infinia 42LV5500

Starting at $880, Yahoo! Shopping

Big, bright and beautiful is how we’d describe this LG 1080p LED-backlit TV, but what really sets this model apart from the others is LG’s Magic Motion remote. You want simple? How about five buttons? Don’t mistake the minimalist design for being limited, though. This remote acts a lot like a Wii remote, allowing the user to simply point at the TV, find what they want and click on it. This makes entering user names and passwords lightning fast and extremely easy. It’s not only about the remote, though. This TV has Wi-Fi built right in, is super bright, very slim and will dress up just about any wall it’s mounted to.

Vizio XVT3D424SV

Vizio XVT3D424SV

Now push your eyes back up into their sockets, you’ll be needing them to enjoy this stunning TV to its fullest.

Toshiba 46WX800U

Toshiba 46WX800U

Starting at $900, Yahoo! Shopping

Check out Toshiba’s top-end Cinema Series 46-inch Regza. Toshiba is known for warm, rich pictures and attractive, ultra-slim design, and this set packs in all those goodies, and a bag of popcorn. The WX800U has a Wi-Fi adapter built right in, Internet apps and widgets, a gaming mode that reduces lag for all you gamers out there and, unlike many other flat-panel TVs, this one sounds as good as it looks because Toshiba didn’t skimp on the audio. It even has Audyssey EQ and Dolby Volume control built right in for excellent sound that won’t blow your doors off every time those local ads pop though.

Panasonic TC-P46ST30

Panasonic TC-P46ST30

Starting at $900, Yahoo! Shopping.

There’s a reason why all the top-of-the-line LED televisions get compared to plasma TVs. Plasmas set the bar high with their stellar black levels and color accuracy. Plus, with plasma, there’s no motion blur to worry about. If there’s not a lot of bright light where you watch TV, plasma is the way to go. This very well-rated Viera series 46-inch model from Panasonic offers 1080p 3D (active 3D glasses sold separately) and access to Internet apps with an optional Wi-Fi adapter – -not to mention stellar plasma picture quality.

Vizio XVT3D474SV

Vizio XVT3D474SV

Starting at $930, Yahoo! Shopping.

Seriously… how does Vizio do it? This 47-inch, 1080p 3D TV sports Ferrari features at a Fiat price. Full-array LED backlighting and 160 dimmable zones means you can expect excellent contrast and deep, deep black levels. Of course, you get all the other goodies too, including built-in WiFi, Vizio Internet Apps, a QWERTY slide-out Bluetooth remote, and envious looks from all your friends.

LG 50PV450

LG 50PV450

Starting at $740, Yahoo! Shopping.

This TV is such a screaming hot deal, we almost kept it to ourselves. Good thing for you we’re not selfish types. This 50-inch LG plasma isn’t 3D capable, but who cares when you can get such a big, fantastic picture for less than $800? We know people who put more gas money into their SUVs in one month. This TV is much prettier and environmentally friendly than an SUV, too. You get a beautiful 1080p picture, an intelligent sensor that brightens and dims the screen based on ambient light, and plenty of adjustable picture settings to get it looking just right. If you don’t have a super bright room and want that big-time picture, this model is going to be hard to beat.

Panasonic Viera TC-P50ST30

Panasonic Viera TC-P50ST30

Starting at $950, Yahoo! Shopping

We scoured the Internet looking for the TV that exemplified the “bang-for-your-buck” proposition and we believe the Panasonic TC-P50ST30 is it. This highly rated 1080p 3D (active 3D glasses sold separately) Plasma is not only one of the largest 3D-capable TVs we’ve been able to find, it’s picture quality is touted as being one of the best out there. An included Wi-Fi adapter gives you instant access to the Viera Connect suite of Internet apps including Netflix, YouTube, HuluPlus, Amazon Video on Demand, Facebook and Twitter. In the sub-$1000 category, it just doesn’t get much better than this.

Two infant twin girls turned “purple” and died Wednesday morning in a south New Jersey apartment, according to a report. The mother of the seven-month-old babies frantically called 911 around 8 a.m. and told a dispatcher her baby twins couldn’t breathe, reports said. “My twins are purple. They’re not breathing!” the woman can be heard saying on the call, which was obtained by a local media outlet. The operator told her to try CPR, but her efforts were fruitless and she was unable to revive them, reports said. Tasia Mayweather, a family friend of the father, said he asked her for a ride to the Lindenwold apartment as the incident was unfolding but they arrived too late, the Courier-Post reported.

    • Lioness attempts to attack tourists but leap falls way short; video

As a vehicle carrying tourists made its way past a lion enclosure in the Serengeti Safari section of the Estrella Biopark in Montemorelos, Mexico, a lioness went into a crouching position as if stalking the visitors. Then it decided to attack, which was a horrible idea by Elsa the lioness, as footage captured by tourist Jan Adrian Diaz proves: The lioness obviously overestimated its leaping ability as it fell into the large moat that surrounds the enclosure and keeps tourists safe for instances such as these. Elsa wasn’t even close to reaching the other side of the trench. The male lion, meanwhile, remained lying in its position, no doubt unimpressed by the lioness’ antics. A park spokesperson

With Megyn Kelly no longer on the air occasionally pushing back against President Trump's treatment of women, Fox News viewers are channeling their ire toward Shepard Smith, who anchors the news and opinion network's afternoon and breaking news coverage. "Smith's persistent fact-mongering has made him persona non grata among some parts of the Fox News faithful," says Paul Farhi at The Washington Post. Smith's past comments affirming human-influenced climate change, supporting same-sex marriage, urging reasoned calm on terrorism and disease, and defending rival network CNN from "fake news" attacks from Trump have raised hackles among some network viewers, but it was this throwing cold water on
