My favorite pair of Marimekko Converse from the Spring 2013 collection
I love sneakers. I love sneakers with jeans, dresses, suits and ball gowns. My personal brand of choice is Converse, the classic Chuck Taylors. I have a large collection of limited edition colors, patterns and artists collaborations.
Racked SF, a style and shopping website, recently interviewed me and wrote and article about my Converse obsession. What is it about sneakers to love so much? Comfort and playfulness. I live in San Francisco and walking around in crazy heels is not practical or safe. I need to be able to cross cable car tracks, run from crazy hobos and hike up Nob Hill to get home. I also love that sneakers can help an outfit seem like you're not trying too hard. Sexy dress, sexy makeup, sexy heels...expected. Sexy dress, sexy makeup and unique playful sneakers....unexpected and comfy!
I have scoured the internet to find some fun and fresh kicks to "Spring-ify" your wardrobe and keep your feet ultra-comfortable. Here are my top picks!
I have to start with Converse, as they are my personal favorites. I am really loving the Converse collaboration with Finnish textile and clothing design company Marimekko. Marimekko was established in 1951 and the brand is known for their bold use of color and original prints. Marimekko designs housewares, clothing, bags and accessories and fabrics. The designs they have created for their Converse collection are graphic, bright and really unique. A pair of Marimekko/Chuck Taylors would take a basic pair of jeans and a t-shirt to a whole new level of interesting and fresh!
The Marimekko Converse are very limited edition so snatch em' up quick. They retail $75 on the Converse website. Sometimes I will see limited edition colors and styles at discount stores like Marshalls or even at the Converse Outlets, but I don't anticipate seeing this particular collaboration there.
In the early part of this year I was online shopping, feeling drab and bored of wearing boots everyday. I started searching for the shoes that would be coming out in Spring, to cheer myself up. I stumbled upon the Kate Spade for Keds collection and I kind of flipped out. I am a huge Kate Spade fan and let's face it Keds are an american classic. You can't go wrong with Kate or Keds! These adorable sneaks are easy to wear with anything from a sun dress to short shorts! The colors and patterns are vibrant, but also classic. I think anyone, no matter age or style could find a unique way to add these shoes into their wardrobe.
*Bonus Pick* The Taylor Swift for Keds sneakers are super cute too! Tons of cute styles to chose from (I would lose the Taylor Swift charm) and they are only about $50.
I spent countless childhood summers running around in my "Jellies" sandals. The Jellies of the 80's were little plastic slip-ons that could be worn in the water. I had lots of different styles, some even infused with glitter! The down-side of 80's Jellies were that they were made of pretty hard plastic and would definitely give you blisters. Also plastic shoes are not breathable, so my feet would sweat and slide around them. A few years ago I discovered the Melissa, a brand that makes super cool designer plastic shoes. Melissa has partnered with luxury designers like Vivienne Westwood, Jason Wu and most recently Karl Lagerfeld. Melissa shoes can run up to several hundred dollars, so I was delighted to hear that a new lower priced line had been launched. Mel Shoes is Melissa Shoes little sister! Mel Shoes are vegan, recyclable and comfortable. I especially like the "We'll have a Wiffle Ball sneaker" that I found on modcloth.com
Mel Shoes "We'll have a Wiffle Ball" plastic sneakers retail $54.99.
I would love to wear these shoes to a picnic, on a first-date...anywhere really! I love the bold red color with the classic sneaker shape. The plastic texture makes them modern and the tiny holes throughout the shoe allow your feet to breathe. I can wear the Jellies of my childhood without blisters and sweaty toes!
Ok, ladies, what are your favorite sneakers and how do you wear them?
