I'm obsessed with eyebrows. Not just my own eyebrows, but the eyebrows of the world. I look at people's eyebrows all the time, deconstruct them and re-imagine them in the shape that I feel would flatter them the most. Countless hours have been spent coaching friends, family and clients about where they need to grow in their brows, what they should do to make their brows look better and urging them to, no matter what, stay away from their tweezers!
Eyebrows are one of the most important and unforgiving features of our face. They frame the eyes and naturally our gaze goes to them. When someone has great brows they look polished, even with a makeup-free face. But overly-tweezed brows or unflattering brow shapes age people and can even distort the shape of a face. Here are some of my tips and tricks to help create your most beautiful eyebrows...
Don't just let anyone groom your eyebrows. I have had horrible wax and threading experiences that have resulted in permanent holes in my eyebrows. While I would love to blame the person who actually did the damage, I have to blame myself.
Many times I rushed into a random nail salon and let anyone available go at my arches. Looking back, that was insane. I knew nothing about their experience level or even their style of shaping.
Take time to research eyebrow specialists in your area. If you see someone with beautiful eyebrows, ask them where they go for their grooming! Once you pick an esthetician, first consult with them. Talk about what your ideal eyebrows would look like, point to areas you don't want waxed or tweezed. Be very thorough, but also be realistic. If you have scrawny brows naturally, you won't walk away with the eyebrows of Cara Delevigne! You may have to work with an esthetician for several months or even years to get the brows you really want. I have learned that perfect eyebrows are a labor of love and take some serious dedication.
About five years ago a crazy waxer hacked at your eyebrows and they never came back? I feel your pain, but there is hope.
First, put down the tweezers and don't pick them up again. Leave your eyebrows alone and see if any growth occurs. Like I said before this can take months or years, you must be patient. You can also purchase an eyebrow growth stimulator. I am using RapidBrow every night and I have seen some little hairs sprouting where for years there has been no growth!
I purchased mine on amazon.com for $32
If your desire for perfect arches requires instant gratification, there are tons of things you can do to make your eyebrows look better. Depending on where you live, you can get them tinted. I DO NOT recommend using hair dye on your eyebrows, it can result in blindness. But there are salons that offer a semi-permanent vegetable-based tint for eyebrows. My favorite place to go is the Benefit Cosmetics Boutiques. Estheticians will custom blend an eyebrow color for you that can last up to 6 weeks and the service only costs about $18! They also do amazing waxing and threading there. I tint my eyebrows every 3-4 weeks and it really helps them look fuller and more defined.
The easiest way to refine your eyebrows is with makeup. There are eyebrow kits, powders, wax, pencils and stencils. I have settled on a wax and powder combo topped with an eyebrow gel.
Eyebrows are the one thing I will not leave the house without, no matter what, so I am very specific about what I use. I like my eyebrows to be very defined, but I don't like them to look like dense block of makeup floating over my eyes. Benefit Cosmetics has a really great wax/powder brow kit called Brows-A-Go-Go that I use everyday. It Retails for $38 and comes with everything you need for perfect brows, plus the powder doubles as eyeshadow!
Once I draw in my brows I brush through them with a clean Spoolie to diffuse and blend the makeup with my natural brow hairs. When the eyebrow makeup is to my liking I set it all with Illamasqua clear Lash and Brow Gel. This gel really holds my brows in place all day and never flakes. After my eyebrows are perfected and set, I like to use a bit of highlighter under the arch to create a crisp clean look. You can use a pencil, like Benefit Highbrow or a matte powder like MAC Gesso. Sometimes I just use any old champagne colored shimmer!
Achieving the perfect brow shape probably seems like a lot of work, but it's worth it. I get compliments on my eyebrows daily and they have also inspired people to pay more attention to the care of their own pair!
I think the most important thing to remember is more is better. You can always take hair off, but it's extremely hard to re-grow your eyebrows after hair has been removed. As we age, our hair, including eyebrows, becomes more sparse. So if you can keep your brows full, you will look younger longer!
I want to hear how you feel about your eyebrows? What are your struggles? What are your favorite products? Who is your eyebrow icon?
