Kinect contest

Thousands of dollars in prize money await creative Kinect owners, but you have to hurry up. This contest is over at the end of this month.

Artec Group, a manufacturer and developer of 3D scanners and 3D face recognition devices, is sponsoring the Winter Fun with Kinect worldwide competition challenging contestants to submit 3D models scanned with Kinect, ASUS Xtion or Primesense sensors – or Artec's Eva 3D scanner. The theme for submission is the winter season. Submissions will be accepted until Feb. 28, and there is no limit to the entries.

All you have to do is download the free trial version of Artec Studio, scan any object associated with winter and upload to the Viewshape site. The most creative, most original and best-executed 3D models will be chosen by the judging panel.

I’m not sure what sort of sensibilities these judges have, but if the Internet has taught me anything it’s that cats, babies and puppies seem to appeal to everyone. I suggest cats wearing Christmas sweaters, snowmen holding puppies or babies riding reindeer. If you already own the Eva, the company’s flagship 3D scanner for professionals, you can enter as well. Just tag your 3D model as #WinterFunEva on ViewShape.

Kinect winners will be in hunt for $1,000, $750 and $500 prizes. Eva winners get special attention with prizes of $1,500, $1,000 and $750. 10 runners-up will get the full version of Artec Studio. There’s also a $250 People’s Choice award. If you’re scan gets the most “likes” you get the cash.

Here’s the cool thing: Once you have discovered Artec Studio x Kinect, you can use your 3D models for gaming/visual effects, online/web visualizations, graphic design, 3D printing and more.
“We are very excited to hold the Winter Fun with Kinect contest,” said Artem Yukhin, President of Artec Group.

“The Artec team has introduced 3D face recognition technology and created a real-time handheld professional 3D scanner. Today, Artec Studio for Kinect takes professional 3D scanning to a new, broader audience of gamers and enthusiasts eager to learn firsthand about 3D scanning.”

Here’s what you have to do:
1.Download Artec Studio, free trial, here.

Registration is required. Take a look at the tutorials to execute 3D scanning properly.

2. Upload your model to Viewshape.com.
Viewshape is a free 3D model uploader, where you can view your scanned objects at different angles, save them and share with your pals.

    • Black-eyed mugshot of Lancaster County suspect gets national attention, disbelief

A police mug shot taken in Lancaster County, S.C., is drawing attention across the country for what appears to be a blond woman with black eyes. The mug shot is of 24-year-old Morgan Joyce Varn, who faces charges of kidnapping, armed robbery and property damage in Lancaster County. She remained in the Lancaster County jail Friday without bond. It is the kind of case that typically doesn’t get attention beyond county lines, but the story was being picked up across the nation Friday due to Varn’s striking image: Full head of blond hair, pale forehead covered in tattoos, and the whites of her eyes appearing to be black and reflective like glass. Social media commenters quickly picked up on the photo,

Whole Foods’ share price has dropped by almost half since October 2013. Lunchtime customers at Whole Foods in Manhattan’s Union Square had little trouble expressing the shortcomings that have led the once high-flying, organic-focused retailer to become linked with a takeover. “I love the sushi, but I wouldn’t shop here except maybe for a special ingredient,” said Argentinian software designer Benjamin Vinas.

As Michigan chases the NFL modern draft record of 14 selections, Day 3 is the Wolverines moving day. Six players were taken the first two days -- Jabrill Peppers and Taco Charlton in the first round, then Chris Wormley, Jourdan Lewis, Delano Hill and Amara Darboh in the third round. That gave the Wolverines their biggest haul since the 2008 draft when seven U-M players were selected, and today there are four rounds to go. When Jake Butt was drafted to open the fifth round, he became the 10th U-M player picked, the most since 10 Wolverines went in the 1974 draft. The build-up to US president Donald Trump’s 100th day in office has been, as is his custom, conflicted. Worried about negative publicity, Trump has recently tried to downplay the 100-day mark as an “artificial barrier.” Which it arguably is—but he set it himself, declaring a bold set of 28 promises to fulfil in 100 days…

Dear Amy: I have three grown children. They are all gainfully employed, with good educations and good relationships. I feel we have a good relationship, and when we are together, we seem to have fun. My husband travels internationally and is gone frequently. Never once has it ever occurred to any of my children (who live an hour or less away) to call me and ask me to go out to grab a bite to eat or even to visit. They know I am here alone. They are perfectly happy to let me come to them and treat them to a meal, but they never reciprocate. I am 62 and retired. I have activities and friends, but my family is important to me. I was always involved in all my children's activities. I worked part

The source of Antarctica's gruesome looking Blood Falls has finally been discovered putting an end to the mystery of where the red water came from. Researchers from the University of Alaska Fairbanks have now concluded that the blood resembling liquid is iron-rich brine that comes from a more than million-year-old lake trapped beneath the Taylor Glacier. It is the same process that gives iron a dark red colour when it rusts.

Well, that was fast. A source confirmed to the site that Rohrbach is the woman in question. Though Rodgers recently revealed he cut back on golf to focus more on his fitness, it seems he’s willing to make an exception for Rohrbach, the model-turned-actress who appears in the upcoming “Baywatch” movie and previously dated
