ANOTHER COUNTRY (1984)
1 of 1 Yahoo! Users found this review helpful The promo blurb is not quite right.Tommy Judd (colin firth) and Guy Bennett(Rupert Everett) are friends but not lovers.
Guy has eyes for James Harcourt(Cary Elwes)and pursues the desires of his heart.
Tommy is a communist who detsets the public school his parents have sent him to.
A school riddled with class, homophobia and authoritarianism.
After two boys are caught together and one hangs himself the threat of scandal grips the ruling elite of the school. Guy discovers love for the first time and disdains to conceal it. The conflict between Guy and the elite is ground shaking for Guy and his future plans are challenged and dashed.
Why did Guy Burgess turn against his country and help the Soviet Union in the Cold War? through the Character of Guy Bennet We are offered a possible explanation.
Marek Kanievska has translated Julian Mitchell's play to screen with excellent filming, locations, haunting sountrack score by Michael Storey and script adaptation.
This film is still one that I watch with the same emotions as when I first saw it back in 1985. It is a masterpiece but more personally I see something of myself in both Tommy and Guy. I reccommend AN ENGLISHMAN ABROAD to follow up with after watching ANOTHER COUNTRY.
Both are films to see ...
