Mike Oldfield’s
only achievement was his ability to play a couple of dozen different instruments, a one-man orchestra, which in itself is an accomplishment of the same magnitude as being a live mermaid in the P.T. Barnum circus. His masterpieces are monotonous, bleak and boring. The extravagant salesmanship of Richard Branson created a genius out of nothing. This could be the only explanation of the success of Tubular Bells. The introduction of exotic instruments (like two slightly distorted guitars) is the most brilliant idea ever and the use of the Sailors Hornpipe theme attests to deep folk roots (and a monstrously tremendous intellect). ... -

Treason!
Gryphon’s pseudo-medieval exercises are of the same nature as the experiments with classical music of such groups as ELP, Deep Purple, Egg and, to a lesser degree, Yes. It was fashionable to borrow from the past, and if there were Roman or ancient Egyptian scores, someone would have put them to work too. Not to confuse with another genre influence – classical (and medieval in case of Gentle Giant) influences of Yes, Banco and other prog bands reflect their commendable learning efforts. Writing like Mozart or Henry VIII would be vanity and futility; why would anyone need an imitation if a genuine thing exists? Troubadours and minstrels in the 20th century - it’s a certain fake. Actually Treason has the least of it but is weak nonetheless. ... -

Very good album,
comparable with Per un Amico. The title track has the most unusual two-minute choral, but it is followed by a heavy-metal-like piece (accompanied by nice guitar work) and it’s a bit too heavy, even the good instrumental can’t soften it. Is My Face on Straight first sounds out of place with its English verses, but it has a good flute (as well as in La Luna Nuova and Via Lumiere) and is pretty good overall. Dolcissima Maria is a nice tune. The rating is more like 4.8. ... -

Per un Amico, their second,
Is a very good album,it’s more of progressive rock than their first record, all selections well composed and performed. Generale features excellent guitars, the title track and Il Banchetto are pretty good too. It’s not exactly 5 star though, more like 4.8. ... -

Yet another sock,
and a total one, a 0-star. It’s a counter-culture strive in full bloom with the stage adorned with red flags, complete artistic impotence akin to that of Marxism itself. There’s nothing to praise and nothing to learn here. ... -

One more sock.
The first few of tracks are somewhat interesting art-rock compositions. In fact Bittern Storm (some resemblance with Samla Mammas Manna) and the first couple of minutes of Half Asleep are pretty good but then the search of the unknown continues. ... -

Their music
was a product of superimposing Italian pop tunes atop progressive-like chords. It’s “listenable” but nothing great. 3.5 stars.
