Not high drama, good family fare
Pros: Muppets, prawns, one liners, and Dorothy?
Cons: Cheezy wizard
This movie is not going to get, nor does it deserve, any of the various awards for movie making. What it will likely get is a loyal following among those of us who love The Muppets and The Wizard of Oz.
I've come to believe it's not possible to create a really bad telling of the The Wizard of Oz, but there is no doubt that some tellings are better than others. This one is hip, irreverant and, yes, a little twisted. This is, IMO, a good thing.
But...
...the Wizard brings down the overall quality of the film. There is an undefinable wrongness about him in this production that mars an otherwise wonderful movie. It's partly due to the used car salesman persona, but the sleeze doesn't stop there.
Even so, if you like The Muppets and you like The Wizard of Oz, you will love this movie. ...
