A movie too adult for children, and too juvenile for adults. Also proves "the devil is in the details." In one scene, Johnny Rico gets a savage whipping that leaves his back covered in bloody welts. Later on, in the bedroom scene, his back shows no sign of the whipping. ...

The Third Time is the Charm!
There were three movie presentations of the famous mutiny on the Bounty and this one is definitely the best of the three. The scenery is good, and the action is more realistic and dramatic. It is also the only film in which the viewpoint of Captain Bligh is presented in an organized fashion and the only version in which his heroic journey back to England is covered in some detail. The flogging scene is also the most realistic. ...

Gorgeous Spectacle; Tedious Plot
The motion picture is an example of excellent, gorgeous photography and captures the beauty of the South Pacific islands. Beyond that, though, it is an overly long film in which long periods of tedium are punctuated with short bursts of activity. Military history buffs might find the film interesting as a catalogue of the various punishments inflicted on British sailors in the latter part of the eighteenth century. Even that is somewhat unrealistic, though, as we are expected to believe that a man could take two dozen lashes with a cat-o-nine tails and not make a sound. ...
