Take a film for what is
Many would dismiss "Prison Heat" (1983) as a typical example of the women-in-prison genre. It has all of the familiar elements: forced undressing, shower scenes, innocent women who are incarcerated in a foreign country and prepared to be sold to the white slave trade, the obligatory breakout, lesbianism. The genre is unpleasant and certainly the word "misogynist" would be often used in this context. But I believe it is important to TAKE A FILM FOR WHAT IT IS. Does the film fulfill its function? Does it do what it should do? Does it fulfill the requirements of the genre? In all cases, "Prison Heat" does. It gives the audience exactly what they want. It would be naive and reactionary to suggest that the film should be anything other than what it is: a showcase for the naked flesh of women. However one may detest the "women-in-prison" genre (and WITH GOOD REASON), it would be difficult to deny that "Prison Heat" gives exactly what it promises. ...
