Weenie Rock
Pros: Upbeat, the Irishy Wind Instrumentals are Different
Cons: No style...very Toad the Wet Sprocket-ish cheeeeese
The other guy's review made me pick it up. Hopefully mine makes everyone else want to put it down. Save yourself the money, or rather spend it on a Barenaked Ladies disc instead if this is the type of music you're looking for. The lyrics on Something Beautiful are hardly that...
"Hey you, you lost your only friend...You can't believe your broken heart will ever mend...every mountain...etc.."
C'mon bro, write some lyrics that don't come out of the Card Catalog of things we've already heard before. Trite words, tired phrases and Dr. Seuss rhymes.
On another note, the lead singer should try out for the part of Roger in Rent (Broadway musical) He sounds just like the soundtrack. But that still doesn't mean you should buy this album. It sucks. ... -

Take some time with this one
0 of 1 Yahoo! Users found this review helpfulPros: Oh
Cons: Flatlined
The only song that stands out on this album (even after listening to it several times) is track 10 "Oh". Its the only original song on the disc. Some of the instrumental was good on the other tunes, but his lyrics were too typical.
He might want to seclude himself in a drinking binge before he writes another...this one just didn't have the introspective attention and divergence from everything else thats being played. Step it up Dave. ... -

Give me a break...
4 of 9 Yahoo! Users found this review helpful This album represents everything that is wrong with young American music. Apparently anyone can cut a pop album...this kid's singing songs with lyrics and music written by somebody else. Wow I know I'm impressed. And anyone can be had by the big hand that feeds them. This album is a collaboration of a group of business men with big wallets just drooling to make them fatter by using some muff headed dork as their stool pidgeon in order to drain another $18.95 out of the "popular" teenage crowd. God bless em'...capitalism at work. Take from the poor minded...take take take.
In short...you're an idiot if you buy this album. Listen to someone who writes their own music, writes their own lyrics, and makes an album on their own merit...not some TV show's. You're all Sheep being hearded by the Sheppard of Capitalism. Suckers. ... -

Uhh
None of what you just said comes anywhere close to what one might consider rational thought. All of us, are now dumber for having listened to you. I award you no points...and may god have mercy on your soul.
Honestly dude, quit the rambling and get to the frikkin point. John Mayer is damn good, the live album is just for the fanatics who want everything they can get of his. If you just want to hear new stuff, wait. Wait until he comes out with an album of new stuff...and in the meantime, shutcher YAPPER. The guy's good and if you listen for more than a minute you would notice that he is nothing like Dave. Up yours. Later hookers. ... -

???What???
I have never heard of half of these songs and the ones I do know kinda suck. How did this ever get to the production stage...but more importantly, don't give these people a single american cent! Shame on them. If you really like one or two of the songs on this disc...go out and buy that particular artists' CD so the money goes to THEM. Better yet, come visit the greatest city in the world and experience the freedom first hand!

A Review of shmct's Review
Please refrain from trying to impress readers of your review with a pretentious extended vocabulary. I know you just attended a spelling bee...but no one cares. Be real.
Like the rest of you, I am looking forward to checking this album out. I will not write a review until I have listened to the entire album at least three time. No album can (nor should) be judged before several spins have been made. And when I do review it, I will not try to impress anyone with my 2 dollar words. ... -

Pretty Damn Good
Not as good as White Ladder, better than all of his earlier stuff though. The only problem I have with 'a new day at midnight' is that there is a lingering theme that holds this album back. Last summer David's father died of cancer, and this album is an extension of that loss. If you read through the lyric book you really get a sense that this loss is the only one he feels like singing about. Of course you can interpret any song in your own way, but the switch from the melancholy and longing of White Ladder to downright depression and searching is an unwelcome transition. I have only listened to it twice, and I genereally stick to my 3-spin rule before making judgements on any album, but so far it falls short of 5 stars because of the darkness. Maybe it's just me...maybe it's just the weather here in New York... ... -

Singer Songwriter
David Gray is a rare breed. Drawing a comparison to Dan Folgelberg??? and Bread? Come on now. More like Cat Stevens and Van Morrison. Lost Songs isn't quite White Ladder (most of it's acoustic) but for those die harders this album comes through with songs like Flame Turn Blue, If Your Love Is Real...Falling Down the Mountainside. I find it funny that this album was "Released" on April 17th but I got it in NYC back in January. Lost Songs serves as a "Where He Came From" type of an album. I say give it a spin and decide for yourself. I'm happy its in my collection. ... -

Not Quite White Ladder...
I hate to admit it, but I am a new David Gray fan, working backwards from White Ladder and Sell, Sell, Sell can't get close to it. The faster, less emotional first couple of songs are ok, but not worthy of 5 stars. I would almost suggest downloading 'Smile' and 'Gutters Full of Rain' and get LOST SONGS David Gray hadn't found his niche yet when he made this album (Sell, Sell, Sell). His niche is DEFINITELY mellow, emotional, and catchy...and he IS the best singer/songwriter I have heard in a long long time. For those who agree with me, try out LOST SONGS...it is mellow with some of the HOOK of W.Ladder. --a must have.
ps. The listing "More Artists Like This" on Yahoo has TOAD THE WET SPROCKET as an artist like David Gray...can someone please remove them...they just suck and are nothing like David Gray ...
An All-Time Low for the Record Industry...
Pros: Tantamount to midget tossing...so it's a little funny
Cons: It's depressing quite frankly...
??? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills...? Is this serious? The only other thing I can equate the release of this album to is midget tossing...its twisted and sick and I really can't believe any self-serving upstanding record producer would release this album, taking advantage of this 'Special' little person, and feel good about making money off of someone else's hardship.
I listened to the tracks. It's embarrassing. It's like putting a third grader in college to see how he'll do on written exams.
But if you must, play a couple of the sample tracks for a giggle. Then feel real bad about yourself for laughing for the rest of the day. ...
