A heart wrenching tale of a Welsh family
Pros: Very good B&W cinematography
Cons: None
The struggles, sacrifices, triumphs, and tribulations of a Welsh family during the depression era told through the eyes of a child. Both Donald Crisp and Maureen O'Hara were great in the movie. The story brought back memories of a by-gone era when family was extremely close. Great family movie. ...

Tamed western but interesting verbal duels
Pros: Good chemistry between Wayne and Hepburn
Cons: None
The on-screen verbal duels between Wayne and Hepburn provided enough interest for me to sit through the movie. Other than that, the plot was very predictable. I still like True Grit more. ...

Honored the Hero but Movie is Just OK
Pros: Real hero playing himself in movie
Cons: Those were not German tanks!
Eddie Murphy deserved every honor he had received. This movie started from his challenge as an adolescent and his decision to join the armed forces after Pearl Harbor. From there on, the movie chronologically played out the key battles Murphy had participated. The battle sequences were not bad considering it was made in 1955. On the flip side, the German tanks depicted in the farm house battle were no German model. This is a perfectly watchable movie, but it is not in the same class as Saving Private Ryan. ...

Good WWII Movie
Pros: Good storyline
Cons: Model submarine and torpedos
A well-paced movie about a contest of wits plus cat and mouse games palyed between the captain of a US navy destroyer and his counterpart of a German U-boat. The readily recognizable model submarine and under-water shots in a huge tank are the few negatives of an otherwise above average movie. ...

Not a bad movie
Pros: Reasonably good storyline
Cons: None
Good, tight and well-paced storyline in this WWII spy movie. Just wonder how lucky was Holden's character( that he was not executed by the Nazis ) when he was implicated by the capture of his co-spy. Holden watched her died but he somehow survived. ...

Dated Material
Pros: Some good acting from Bergmann
Cons: Predictable storyline
Kind of soap opera of the 30's and 40's. Tame by today's standard. If you are after acting skills, you might still find something from this movie. Otherwise, you will be better off watching FRIENDS. ...

Way Over-Rated
Pros: Good Action Sequence in the Pavilion
Cons: Incredulous Storyline
(1) Storyline: I find it hard to believe an experienced hand who set out on a plot to lure her enemy into a trap would fall in love with her enemy in just a few days.
(2) Set: Both the headquarter of the inspectors and the pavilion looked brand new! Very unlikely in China a thousand years ago.
(3) Final battle: The final battle between the two male leads looked like a street fight and both of them were supposed to be well trained in martial art.
On the positive side, I do like the scene in the bamboo forest where government soldiers were hanging heads down on the bamboo in the fog and in silence . Quite a sight!
For those who want to see a great martial art movie with a love story, I suggest they check out Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. ... -

Definitely Worth Viewing
Pros: N/A
Cons: N/A
This movie may not be as big in scale and scope as Lawerence of Arabia, nevertheless, it is a captivating movie. Good acting performance from both Charlton Heston( as General Gordon ) and Sir Laurence Olivier( as Gordon's antagonist, the Mahdi ). A drama that brought out the psychological and military battles between the two men in their battle for Khartoum, as well as the faltering policy of the British government to rescue the city and its population. Great movie! ...

Not as good as ZULU
Pros: N/A
Cons: N/A
The prequel to ZULU based on true events. The movie was made after the release of ZULU. Although there are some good battle sequences in ZULU DAWN, ZULU is still better and the one to watch. The video is sort of dated and the audio at time not too clear. For those who are curious in how numerical superiority could compensate for weaponry inferiority in battle, this is the movie for you. ...

A fascinating story
Pros: A fact based story
Cons: No additional documentary material of Fr. O'Flaherty
Based on the work of monsignor O'Flaherty in WWII Rome. This incredible priest risked his own life to rescue thousands of jews and allied pilots from capture by the Nazis during WWII. A fascinating story well acted by both Peck and Plummer. Highly recommended. ...
