Cons: Built in battery
I did not purchase the IPod because it has a built-in battery. This means that you must mail the unit to Apple to have the battery replaced. An IPod battery has an expected lifespan of one and a half to two years. The replacement cost is $99.00 plus shipping and an approximate 2 weeks without your unit.
Sony has it new product the NW HD-1 it too has a built in battery. I called Sony to obtain the cost of the battery and the expected lifespan. They were unable to provide answers to my questions. The product has the same flaw as the IPod and it’s not cheaper; in fact the NW HD-1 cost more.
I also attempted to find out if the warranty covered the battery and if so, for how long. Although the Sony NW HD-1 has the battery issue, like the IPod, its one saving grace, you do not need to mail the unit to Sony, and you can take it to any authorized dealer.
Before you buy, find out the cost of the battery, which Sony has not stated, as “it will not be an issue for a couple of years”. Not good enough for me, I recommend that you hold off on buying the product until Sony provides:
1) expected lifespan
2) approximate cost
3) Warranty details on defective batteries
In case you are wondering, I did evaluate this product, but I left it on the self, until I get more information about the battery. I do not want to pay $150 after using a product for a year. Sony, needs to provide the details of the battery. ...
