The LOTR big box
5 of 5 Yahoo! Users found this review helpfulPros: All Great Stuff
Cons: A bit too bulky, & no real price break over individual 4-disk sets
I took a look at the new box set of LOTR and decided to stay with my 4-disk sets. At $25-$30 a set, they are virtually the same price as the box, and are a lot easier to handle without tearing or whatever. Unless you need the extra cardboard display box for some reason, just buy the separate 4-disk sets and enjoy the adventures as they were released. Also it was unclear whether "all" the same documentary features were included in the box. I would highly reccommend them to anyone who doesn't think "special features" on DVD's can be worthwhile. They are fascinating, and even entertaining.
Bottom line, the separate 4- disk sets are easier to handle and store, include all the great doc. features, and are the same cost as the box. Enjoy ... -

S2 is great, but not perfect.
Pros: funny, great look, and characters.
Cons: too much of a gag-a-thon
I admit that my expectations were too high going into this movie, but the media blitz made it impossible not to. Don't get me wrong, I liked this movie a lot, but not more than the original. There were so many gags in this that I found it distracting from the story. It was a great premise, and I didn't think it was given enough attention. Still, good show and I look forward to the next one. ...

Words fail, but here goes.
Pros: Amazing,amazing amazing!
Cons: It's over.
I just want to begin by saying that I am not a fan of the books. That may put me in the unpopular minority, but there it is. I read The Hobbit as a teen, and although I was fascinated by the imagination and depth of character in that book, I could not get past the first few chapters of "Fellowship" because it was so depressing to me to see all the turmoil and backstabbing between the groups of "people" occupying Middle Earth. That being said, I am in total awe of the loving craftmanship and dedication that was apparent throughout the entire series of "Ring' movies. Peter Jackson is a mad genius and the cast and crew were willfully swept up in that madness.
These films are BEAutiful in every way that a film can be. Great effects, acting, cinematography, scripting, and attention to detail. I heard so many reviews saying that the 3rd installment was the "best" of the bunch, but I believe that numbers 1 & 2 were what made the 3rd one work. I liked these characters, and I was with them, all of them, every "step" of the way.
I also must say that I actually enjoyed the films more after taking them home on DVD and seeing them on the small screen. They were, I think, too big to really take in on the large movie screens where I first saw them. I have the 4 disk sets of the first two, and will get the 4 disk of the 3rd when it comes out, because the special features are AWESOME. The extra scenes are great, but the documentary features are as good as the movies (almost). I still don't think I want to read the books, although my two kids have done so. I will, however, be a fan of the films for life. I bow to whoever was involved in getting such an unlikely project (in scope) greenlighted for production. Bless you! ... -

Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban
Pros: More realistic "look" & mature dialog
Cons: Too much material left out . Needs a sequel or part two
A needed departure from the "kiddieland" look of the first two films. No offence to Chris C. but the later books do call out for some deeper & darker cinematic visuals. Great new characters, Emma Thompson is riotous as Trelawney, and although Serious Black was different than either my kids or I pictured him, he did, after all, just get out of prison, so maybe his look will soften a bit for the next film.
I also liked the evolutoin of the relationship between the 3 main characters. P l e a s e don't cut character devolopement to save time. H.P. is all about the characters! Worth watching more than once to fully appreciate the new look, and grown up attitudes of our boy wizard and friends. ...

prophecy
Pros: Unique story, great characters, nice balance.
Cons: ?
I was really pleasantly surprised by this movie that sort of came out of nowhere. A really interesting premise, nicely realised and paced, and as always, an eccentric but believable performance by Christopher Walken, as well as the rest of the cast.
Also there is the good news that the two subsequent films are pretty darn enjoyable as well. Not, however, for the faint at heart. ...
