A wonderful film that got a poor DVD treatment.
Pros: The movie is on DVD!
Cons: It's not a DVD, it's VCD.
Make no mistake, Dona Herlinda is a great film and I'd recommend it to anyone who's interested in solid storytelling and filmmaking.
For students of the Spanish language, the spoken word is largely textbook academy Spanish that is clearly understandable and doesn't include too many colloquialisms that are confusing to the ear.
For those who are fans of Gay cinema, this movie is a treat, Guadalupe del Toro is amazing to watch on film as Dona Herlinda. Plus, look for a cameo of director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Blade II and The Devil's Backbone) dancing at a local plaza.
It's just such a shame that the video transfer was so poor. Were the negatives in such bad shape? The DVD is more like a VCD. Images are blurry, sound is a little off, but nevertheless a treat to watch anyway. ...
