Up there with the best of em!
I'm quite a horror flik fan and I'm well aware of the fact there are not enough if not a select few movies in this genre that are actually GREAT. Most really do suck cause of the excess cheesiness! :-))
But this movie which is seriously underated is to me as scary as it can get.
It IS very realistic. People do go to camp, people do hitchhike and not for nothing ... It IS very possible and VERY easy for some psycho to plan out , stalk and take out a group as Mrs Voorhes does here.
The actual killings are with out a doubt monumental. Sure Pycho was in fact the mother of slasher.. .WAY before another one of my faves Halloween. But this one just took it to new heights.. Like how many ways can I take them out?? But ..
What makes this installment of this series the BEST one of them all and that lacks in all the followups after Part 2 and some degree 3 and 4 is the fact that you absolutely have no idea who or where the killer is !! You never see what you think is a he . You NEVER see the killer . And even when you do find out you are right in the sole survivors shoes when she does find out who did it when Voorhees snaps as shes lechures her about who was her son Jason.
It's the STALKING that makes it scary when I watch it over and over. The blackness and tone of the camp , the rain. The vibes that are put out like when Marcie talks of her premonition ( rain turning to blood) of her murder that occurs here.
Over all the vibe of stalking, doom, gloom and what Friday The 13th truly is is captured to a tee in the original . That it is . The others up to 4 to me are good but don't touch this!
Yeah . this is one for the horror books without question. My fave since I first saw it!

Pros: Everything in this movie is in the right place and beyond ..Just a perfect action movie
Cons: None .. Nothing looks fake .. This movie is indeed a lesson for filmakers .. WIsh there were a lot more movies like F B
Hands down this is my favorite Sly flick ever!! One day my Dad took my brothers and I to see this back in 1982 and I knew Stallone from Rocky of course .. but this movie just blew me away !! I agree with the earlier review about studying this movie if your a young filmaker.. Cause it is done as good as it can get for action and suspense .
What blew me away was a myriad of elements ... First of all Stallone bringing to life another strong character in his own right ... that is light years from Rocky .. night and day ... You can't find a hint of Rocky if u studied every millisecond of F B . So acting wise .. I mean . .this shows Stallone at his finest I strongly believe ..
I can't get over those friggin cops.. Vagarency?? Where .. ? when ? A cop just can't tell u to get out of the town for no reason.. thats not possilbe. . but this cop does it ... I mean he only wanted something to eat.. He could have at LEAST ... gone into a restaurant or store .. and get him a sandwich before sending him off to Portland .. But then again .. if he did .. there wouldn't be this awesome movie that unraveled ! :-))
Art Gault .. Deserved that free fall onto the rocks .. that was classic and perfectly justified.. Man I hated that character .. Gault was hundred percent redneck !! And hundred percent dead through no fault but his own. Nevertheless I applaud that actor for making me hate that character so much! Well done ! Brian D same thing! I heard somewhere that Brian D was actually a Vietnam Vet. If that is accurate - THAT is VERY INTERSTING! A guy from V N playin a cop that dispises a guy from V N .. Go Figure ..
My favorite character of all of them was KERNAL TROUTMAN! That speech he gives to Teasel ...! " ... TO EAT THINGS THAT'LL MAKE A BILLY GOAT PUKE!!! " great line .. as is " IF YOU SEND THAT MANY DON'T FORGET ONE THING .... WHAT? .... A GOOD SUPPLY OF BODY BAGS!! " ANNND " I DIDN'T COME HERE TO RESCUE RAMBO FROM YOU .... I CAME HERE TO RESCUE YOU FROM HIM..
Then you have all the action .. which never looks fake for a second. I really wanna know how they did A) Rambos fall from that cliff .. and B ) Art Gaults fall to his death .. Cause it looks so damn REAL!! I mean it looks pretty much "ON LOCATION" ..
Oh yeah .. and this movie without a doubt .. STARTED the whole ... Vietnam themed movies of the 80's that followed ..and there was a lot of them .. some great .. some sucky .. even PREDATOR .. which is more of an ALIEN movie .is essentally Arnold S' stab at doing a RAMBO type movie and Alien movie at the same time :-) Thats another flick i love btw !
If you never saw First Blood . You are missing out .. If you have .. and loved it .. You'll never get sick of it .. Hell I watch it for days when I get around to watching it! Can't put in another tape for awhile once I start watchin !!
