This is a print of my original four leaf clover herbarium specimen (pressed botanical) artwork. It was made from a high-resolution scan of the original. The plant is white clover (Trifolium repens) & features TWO four leaf clovers on the same plant! It was found in a clover-filled field in New Orleans, LA & was collected by a trained, degreed professional (see my personal profile). An optional, complete collection label is included in the standard location at the bottom right corner of the front of the specimen adding to its scientific appeal. ABOUT THESE 4-LEAF CLOVERS: This unique specimen has 2 four-leaf clovers on the same plant! I curiously consulted the world's expert in clover genetics. He informed me that when two plants each having at least one four-leaf clover are bred in the lab, they often produce offspring having more than one four-leaf clover. This suggests that inheritance plays some role in producing 4-leaf clovers, at least some of the time! Four-leaf clover occurrence is thought to be about 1 in every 5,000-10,000 leaves, & finding more than one on the same plant in nature is even more rare. Luckily, we happened upon a field with an unusually high occurrence of four-leaf clovers & found 2 plants with more than one. Though super interesting, not much is known about four-leaf clover genetics because funding almost always goes to more economically important research. Four-leaf clovers are rare variations of the leaves of white clovers, which typically only have leaves with 3 leaflets. Common three-leaflet clovers are called shamrocks. Now you know the difference! Options: SIZING - The original herbarium specimen was 11x14". However, prints are available in 5x7", 8x10", 11x14" & 16x20"! Smaller sizes are printed on a natural-colored, archival-quality, heavy-weight cardstock, & 16x20" are printed on a heavy, white, poster paper. BACKGROUND COLOR - All sizes are also available with a "Dark Background." in order to preserve the original colors of the plant, the dark background is digitally added to the artwork file prior to printing (on light-colored paper), resulting in a stunning contrast between the vibrant plant & the black background. SCIENTIFIC COLLECTION LABEL - All sizes & background colors are also available with just the scientific name of the plant & artist signature in place of the collection label.
