They used to hold it crosswise, & they put the coin to one side (where the notches/steps are, depending on the coin size - if it was a half lira, 1/4 lira, or one lira, they put it on a different notch). If the coin had the right weight, the scale remained vertical. If not, it falls to one side. The merchants used it in the 19th & early 20th century Antique Coin Pocket Balance Scale
