iPod nano - Needs Help in Some Areas

By JH  Nov 26, 2007 | 7 out of 8 found this iPod Nano 8GB (3G) - Black review helpful

Pros: Video at last, very small, $50 cheaper, nice looks

Cons: Abysmal battery life for video, needs more storage space, buggy OS

When I held the iPod nano, if felt solid and well built in my hand. It is very small, a little too small for my taste. The click wheel is rather inconsistent, jumping down categories at times. The new UI (user interface) is rather slow, sometimes tak...ing a few seconds to load a menu. Coverflow is pointless... BUT, for its functionality, great appearance, and price, it is a great player for the beginner buyer. Read more Less

Pros: Sensitive click wheel, not 16GB flash memory

Cons: Small, no hard drive so I don't have to worry about dropping it.

I've seen people say it's expensive, but if you compare it to the last gen Nano, it's $100 cheaper for the same amount of storage, plus video capability this time around. Also, this is not intended to store your entire movie c...ollection. That's the iPod Classics job. That's why it has over 100GB of storage. There is a reason there are 4 different kinds of iPods; they each taylor to a different music, and video library style. As far as battery life goes, it ONLY lasts a mere 20-24 hours if you are playing music; and about 3.5-5 playing video, depending on how you use it. Which, realistically, comes out to charging it maybe every 3 or 4 days if you mostly listen to music. As far as quality issues. I've had none. It syncs perfectly every time, I've never lost anything off of it. It helps to know how the iTunes sync works. If you remove a song from a play list, or delete it from your library, the next time you sync, it won't be in that playlist or on your iPod at all. Also, I have a OS 10.4 so I don't have Vista, or XP on my computer to wreak havoc with the iPod software, which can happen. So, if you're looking for something to hold 10-20 hours worth of video, this is not the mp3 player for you. But if you want to store 4 days worth of music, and the occasional video podcast or two, into a player that will fit into the palm of your hand, then this is the player for you. Also, the simplicity of use alone makes it worth buying. A post script: You will probably want to replace the ear buds that come with it, the are not great. Also, it's very light, and if you put it in your pocket, it can be easy to forget it's there. So check to make sure it's not in your pockets before you wash your clothes. Read more Less
