    What hits?

Pros: It fits in a trashcan

Cons: Some poor saps might actually buy this

Brittany Spears is a tabloid joke. Normally, music stars must endure at least a decade of true success in the field of actually making music before he/she/them have the catalog for a greatest hits compilation. This waste of CD bin space includes 2 of... the same songs, different mixes, a cover tune, and "hits" that only recently were removed from heavy rotation on your local Clear Channel Top 10 station. "...Baby One More Time" (with the controversial "Hit Me" replaced by 3 dots) and "Oops I did it Again" are the same song, different words. No talent, unimaginative production, bottom line, pure-T crap. Brittany is photogenic, nothing more. Read more Less

    Why would you buy this?

By Jenn  Nov 10, 2004 | 5 out of 8 found this Greatest Hits: My Prerogative review helpful

Pros: It would make a swell frisbee

    Cons: It's Britney

Buying this cd would be a colossal waste of 15 dollars. Britney Spears can't make a greatest hits cd, she'd need a repertoire of at least 5 albums before she could put together something like that. Plus, a person actually has to have good mus...ic to have greatest hits. You can't have great hits without great music. Hers clearly isn't good, it being all the same, manufactured "I can't write my own songs cause I'm a ditz" garbage that it is. Britney Spears is nothing more than a pretty face and a sweaty body. If she's the standard against which we measure if music is good or bad, then our society is obviously in trouble. She couldn't "sing" (if you can call it singing) a good song if it was staring her in the face ready for her to reach out and grab. She'd being doing all her young fans a favour if she were to retire tomorrow. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Greatest Hits: My Prerogative

  • All Music Guide

Greatest Hits: My Prerogative appeared at the tail end of a year where Britney Spears was married twice, canceled a tour, injured her knee, lost the movie role of Daisy Duke to rival teen pop diva Jessica Simpson, was a punch line in Fahrenheit 9/11, and had countless paparazzi shots of her drinking and making out in public. It was enough highprofile shenanigans for a career, and it was par for the course for Britney, who hadn't been out of the pop culture headlines since she released her debut album, ...Baby One More Time, in January 1999. In the nearly six years separating that debut album and the release of Greatest Hits in November 2004, Britney was omnipresent, representing both the entire teen pop phenomenon of the turn of the millennium, plus the teasing, Maximfueled sexuality of the time; it's not for nothing that Tom Wolfe name drops Britney Spears, not archrival Christina Aguilera, in his 2004 novel I Am Charlotte Simmons Britney alone captured the era, which in turn is capt...ured on this 17track hits collection. If Bob Dylan had a hard time being a voice of a generation (which he does acknowledge in his autobiography, Chronicles), imagine the weight put upon this simple Louisiana girl who just wanted to be famous and became a cultural icon instead During those six years, she kept turning out product, selling herself with increasingly racy photographs, all the while being used as an example of everything that's wrong with pop culture, or even worse, as the subject of cultural theses explaining pop culture. No wonder that after six years of mindboggling fame she wanted to abandon her career for motherhood it's exhausting being in the limelight, even for a shameless pop star So, Greatest Hits arrived at a perfect time just as her star was fading, just as the teen pop era grew to a close, and just as she readied herself for retirement. Biography

Britney Spears

More than any other single artist, Britney Spears was the driving force behind the return of teen pop in the late '90s. The blockbuster success of the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys certainly paved the way for her own commercial breakthrough, but Spears didn't just become a star she was a bona fide pop phenomenon. Not only did she sell millions of records, she was a m... Read more
