    Alicia Holds The Keys

By Eric Halcon  Nov 22, 2007 | 4 out of 4 found this As I Am review helpful

    Pros: True To Herself

    Cons: Nothing

Always trust Alicia Keys to put out a bestseller of astonishing performance. At age 27, she has the pipes, an armful of Grammy Awards, a list of smash hits and other acolades to prove it. Alicia Keys released her debut album, "Songs in A Minor&...quot;, in 2001 and generated the #1 hit single, "Fallin'". Instead of jumping at the pop music bandwagon prevalent at that time as evidenced by Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera and other contemporaries, Keys took the road less traveled as she forayed in to the direction of a mature sounding R&B and soul music. After all, she had the necessary training for such. In 2004, "The Diary of Alicia Keys" saw the light of the retail market and earned her one of the biggest singles of the year via the hit "If I Ain't Got You". The track was so successful that a team-up and a re-recording with Usher (2004's undisputable chart champ with his CD "Confessions") was inevitable, consequently "My Boo", their second collaboration was born. In 2007, Keys returns in full form to dominate the charts with her 3rd studio album simply called "As I Am". The lead single, "No One" is currently enjoying a healthy dose of airplay and the CD employs the same winning formula her previous albums had--a haunting piano verse, soulful lyrics and a powerful voice. Pay heed to "Superwoman", "Lesson Learned" (which also features John Mayer) and "Like You'll Never See Me Again" and you'll know what I mean as these tracks leave you breathless and yearn for more Keys. On the other hand, "Where Do We Go From Here" is a reminiscent of the style of Roberta Flack back in the 1970s. Simply put, "As I Am" is an exceptionally good buy. How can someone so young be so versatile for her age? That I have no idea. However, as she concludes her CD with a track "Sure Looks Good To Me", rest assured that she is referring to her career and I second the motion. No questions asked. Read more Less

By now established as a major and talented force in the mainstream music world, Alicia Keys has perhaps earned the right to explore a little, to venture into new genres while still keeping a foot firmly planted in the RB/neosoul she grew out of. On her third fulllength, As I Am, Keys takes a step closer toward the soul revival popularized by John Legend, with fullband arrangements and bright horn hooks, only occasionally falling back into the piano/melisma combination that drove the singles off her first two albums. Instead, here, as evidenced in "No One" which sounds all too ready to take on a "reggae dance mix" the guitardriven "I Need You," "Wreckless Love," or "Where Do We Go from Here," which pays tribute to both Stax and Motown ("All I can do/Is follow the tracks of my tears," she sings, after a sample of Wendy Rene's "After Laughter [Comes Tears]" crackles through the first few bars), this is music that owes as much to pop as it does RB, highlighted no less by the fact that th...e queen of radio rock herself, Linda Perry, cowrites three of the songs with Keys, including the straightfromtheStrippedsessions "The Thing About Love" and "Superwoman." It is on the latter, in fact, that Keys, unsurprisingly, turns furthest away from the style that brought her initial success (more so even than on the John Mayer collabo, "Lesson Learned," which is actually not bad) toward the genericpop world, sliding in between corny and sincere, sometimes even in the same breath. "When I'm breaking down/And I can't be found/...'Cause no one knows/Me underneath these clothes/But I can fly/We can fly," she sings in the bridge, flatly. Keys has never been a brilliant lyricist, but she's always been able to write simple yet affective and honest words that don't seem trite, something that is forgotten here, and makes the track one of the weakest on the album. Fortunately, this doesn't happen too often, and as As I Am weaves its way through the drums and various keyboards and vocal harmonies that make up the backbone of her work here, punctuated by the great, hooky melodies and strings, you get the impression that this is in fact the sign of an artist who's not content to only follow the path that's brought her previous acclaim, an artist who's looking to find more, both about herself and her music, and an artist who carries these developments, these insights, with her. And so even though As I Am is a flawed work a little too poppy, a little too clichéd it is also indicative of what Keys can and will do, and that she is someone, thanks to her curiosity, intelligence, and natural talent, who will be able to mature and grow for years to come. - Marisa Brown, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Alicia Keys

Her official website says she possesses an "old soul," and the hard facts seem to back up the implied claim of wisdom and experience that transcend Alicia Keys' youth. Barely in her twentiess, Keys is responsible for an extremely hot debut, Songs in A Minor. The release, which she wrote and produced for Clive Davis' J Records, blends diverse influences, including RB, hi... Read more
