Zatoichi is a 19th century blind nomad who makes his living as a gambler and masseur. However, behind this humble facade, he is a master swordsman gifted with a lightning-fast draw and breathtaking precision. While wandering, Zatoichi discovers a remote mountain village at the mercy of Ginzo, a ruthless gang-leader. Ginzo disposes of anyone who gets in his way, especially after hiring the mighty samurai ronin, Hattori, as a bodyguard. After a raucous night of gambling in town, Zatoichi encounters a pair of geishas--as dangerous as they are beautiful--who've come to avenge their parents' murder. As the paths of these and other colorful characters intertwine, Ginzo's henchmen are soon after Zatoichi. With his legendary cane sword at his side, the stage is set for a riveting showdown.

a fresh take on an old samurai film

    By alex  Dec 30, 2006

Pros: samurai action, comedy, and drama

    Cons: gory special effects

Back in the 70s, countless samurai movies were being shown worldwide. And one of them that is being given a fresh, new adaptation is Takeshi Kitano's "Zatoichi: the Blind Swordsman". Mr. Kitano is both the director and the principal act...or of the film and we admire his portrayal of the main character, his presentation of the story imbued with suspenseful samurai action and unexpected comedy.Different character studies were presented in the story like the geishas seeking revenge, the village idiot, Zatoichi's comedic friend in gambling, and Zatocihi himself, a skilled samurai, masquerading as a masseur. We liked this story for its unexpected twists and surprises. If you don't mind seeing the goriness of cutting limbs and spilling blood, and if you liked Kill Bill, see this one. The outcome can be over the top and will seem fantastic but we liked how the story flowed. Read more Less
