Beginning in the early '80s, percussionist Z'ev (b. Stefan Weisser) pursued an early, highly experimental vein of industrial music, creating harsh, noisy, ultraloud soundscapes that favor sonic texture over recognizable musical structure. Z'ev's work influenced many other early industrial bands, including Test Dept. and Einstürzende Neubauten, and he has performed as a featured musician in Glenn Branca's Symphony No. 2. Weisser recorded several EPs under his given name in 1981 and 1982, adopting the name Z'ev for 1982's Elemental Music. He recorded off and on throughout the '80s, also collaborating with Psychic TV on 1984's Berlin Atonal, Vol. 1. Z'ev's first U.S. releases in almost 15 years began to appear in the late '90s, including the Tales From the Poison EP on Surf Ave. and the collection Ghost of One Foot in the Grave on Touch.
