From AMG Reviews

With a predictable combination of movie/TV themes, dreary covers of Top 40 ballads, some jazz and a few striking moments, this is a maddeningly uneven follow-up to Smackwater Jack. A magically spooky saunter through the Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer in the City" leads it off, but the record becomes bogged down in easy-listening strings and "soulful" vocals, despite the presence of ace soloists like Phil Woods, Hubert Laws and George Duke. Things do become more exuberant as Stevie Wonder punctuates his "Superstition" on harmonica, and a fussed-over big-band rendition of Dizzy's "Manteca" delivers sporadic kicks. But Q mostly marks time before going completely off the reservation on his next outing.
