Pro Reviews: You Must Remember This...

  • All Music Guide

The king of goofball roots music devotes almost all of this album to cover material, concentrating mostly on songs from the pre-rock era. Few folk-based performers are as skilled at reviving old songs with as much reckless imagination. His vocals, simultaneously affectionate and wildly irreverent, will not be to everyone's taste. But certainly many listeners whose sense of humor extends beyond the boundaries of Saturday Night Live will find Stampfel's joyfully twisted singing putting grins on their faces. The arrangements adroitly tap country, Tin Pan Alley, New Orleans, and even a bit of rock influence; the blazing covers of "Goldfinger" and "Cry of the Wild Goose" are highlights.
