  • All Music Guide

Eighteen stunning hard gospel performances (recorded between 1948-59) by arguably the greatest practitioners of the art. Brownlee was master of controlled vocal pandemonium, his deft leaps from the decorous to the delirious prompting the faithful to "fall out" in ecstatic fits. His "Amazing Grace" becomes an extraordinary plea for deliverance, while The Blind Boys' vamp on the Lord's Prayer ("World Prayer") is a beautifully-tiered tour de force of prayer and song. Anyone wanting to experience the fervor of hard gospel at its intense yet artful best should hear this profoundly heartfelt and masterfully performed music.
