Pro Reviews: Yn Fyw Blychau Clir

EXPERT RATING:

From AMG Reviews

Efatha's musicians explore their heritage with an album that includes traditional Celtic tunes, Yn Fyw Blychau Clir, which translates to Living in Clear Boxes. They also incorporate their own original compositions, as on "Crazy Apple," about life and New York City. ("What is existence in the times we're living?/'Cause in this Crazy Apple we are in/One can hardly stop to catch a breath.") On the traditional side, whistle interweaves with effective hand percussion on "Burning Down the Piper's House," while "Memories of the Waterfall" and "Celtic Inquisition" offer old-style sound on modern Efatha compositions. "Caleb's Land" could use a remix to strengthen the vocals to match the sound level of the instrumentals -- at present it sounds like the lead is too far from her mic. Hopefully they'll re-record this one, as it's a melodic composition that merits improved vocal/instrumental balance. Still, it's the exception rather than the rule. So for a tasteful melding of old and new Celtic music, pick up a copy of Yn Fyw Blychau Clir, Efatha's follow-up to This Is What You Get.
