    hoping it gets better

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 1, 2003 | 4 out of 4 found this Xenosaga: Episode I -- Der Wille zur Macht review helpful

NOTE that currently Im only 12 hours into Xenosaga. Im sure it will get at least a little better as it goes on. Its a fun RPG, but its nowhere near as original or as fun as Xenogears. The polygon graphics and movies are great. Its cool that graphics ...have evolved enough to where the gameplay and movies in the game look exactly the same, but like with LUNAR; Silver Star Story Complete and Xenogears; I enjoyed the separation between great quality anime movies and decent enough gameplay graphics. Many reviews say that this game should be played by only die hard Xenogears fans, but I feel the exact opposite. Any casual RPG gamer should appreciate this game being a good one. But the Xenogears fans, the ones who have been waiting for years for a great sequel, will be let down. The menus, colorings, and over all feeling of the game borrow more from Front Mission 3 than its supposed series member/ originator, Xenogears. The game feels minimalistic. The orchestrated music is fine, but few and far between. The environments can be colorful, but often times feel vacant and empty. The battle sequences are do able, but nothing special. The side games are less than exciting. XenoCard is about as fun as watching YU GI OH, in fact I think just swapping out XenoCard for a version of YU GI OH in the game would have made it more exciting. Anyways, The characters are well developed and the story lives up to its predecessors. The story is going to be deep, enjoyable, and defintley the thing people remember this game for. It seems like more could have been added to the game to give it more personality, and it just wasnt. Perfect way to sum it up. Remember how great Star Wars: A New Hope was the first time you saw it. And then The Phantom Menace came out and you thought you would be blown away,, but you were just half assed impressed. Thats how I feel about Xenosaga. I might just hype sequels up too much. Give it rent first before you buy. Read more Less

Spiele auf den jahr! ( Game of the Year!)

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 17, 2003 | 3 out of 3 found this Xenosaga: Episode I -- Der Wille zur Macht review helpful

I honestly have not really seen a good SCi-FI RPG in so long that I thought that they had all dried up. Keeping in mind that for those 13 year olds, with the attention span of King Kong on Crack, the storyline may get boring as they look for the eye ...candy that DOES pervades the game all the way through as long as you get through the storyline. Now dont think that I am new to this world. I DID play the original Xenogears several years ago and frankly found that the playstation lacked the medium to tell the story in a way that kept your attention span. Instead it kept you guessing as to what was going on while at the same time pressing a button repeatedly trying to hurry the dialog up so you could just get to the good stuff. Xenosaga, however, captures the essence of what Xenogears tried to tell and does it in the same way as Final Fantasy X did with animated sequences and superb voice acting but unlike FFX it keeps a pretty fair pace through all the hours of video. I do have to admit that there was a lot of video for the game in proportion to gameplay but I would rather they did it like that then to cajole us with text dialog that we have to button-mash through. The game is a mystery, action, martial-arts, sci-fi game that IS more like a movie but that you can control and level up the characters to make sure that they make it through the movie. I did object to them making it in installments but after playing it I can understand. The amount of work for the story they are telling cant be contained on one disc. So instead of charging us even more money for a 150 hour game of 3 or 4 discs, they divide it up and let us play it while they work on the next piece. I just hope it doesnt do like some book or movie series do that are never finished.... Read more Less

    too many cut scenes

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 11, 2003 | 3 out of 3 found this Xenosaga: Episode I -- Der Wille zur Macht review helpful

Well this is a great game with good graphics. The only problem that I have with it is the cut scenes, in the first four hours of game play about half of it is cut scenes. There are some scenes that go on for thirty minutes, that is just too long. You... buy video game to play not watch a movie. Other than that the game is really good Read more Less

    Not everyone will enjoy Xenosaga

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 30, 2006

Pros: The Story of game, character kid graphic

    Cons: Batle system,lack of character

No other single game to date is as story-driven as Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht, a rather conventional RPG at its core, but one with an exhaustively detailed and occasionally long-winded narrative. Playing through Xenosaga involves watchin...g an inspired anime sci-fi miniseries unfold, as the game packs in literally hours upon hours of noninteractive 3D cutscenes. Often, you do more watching than playing, so if you're the sort who gets frustrated at having to sit through cutscenes, then do yourself a favor and don't bother with this game. Also, the emphasis on story means that Xenosaga isn't always the most riveting gameplay experience. However, the story is what will prove to be the main attraction for many fans of the genre--especially for fans of Xenogears, a daring 1998 RPG published by Square that, like Xenosaga, is long, complex, and heavily focused on storytelling. Both games' stories touch on some decidedly sensitive subjects, most notably by making numerous allusions to various religious faiths--and in this case, all in the context of a sweeping, melodramatic space opera. Not everyone will enjoy Xenosaga, but serious fans of RPGs or anime almost certainly will. Regardless, Xenosaga is by all means an impressive and genuine effort, one that legitimately deserves both praise and attention. Published by Namco rather than Square but designed by the same developers as Xenogears, Xenosaga isn't directly related to Square's cult classic, but the similarities between these games will be unmistakable to those who remember Xenogears. Xenosaga is a science-fiction-themed game set thousands of years in the future, when humankind is being threatened by a mysterious, ethereal alien menace called the gnosis. Shion Uzuki is a young scientist heading up the development of a female android equipped to deal with these bizarre monstrosities. To say much more about the story would be to give away some of its surprises, but suffice it to say that some surprising events bring Shion and her android creation into league with some other unusual characters who, coincidentally or not, are headed to the same destination. Along the way, they will face the wrath of the gnosis, a number of shadowy political factions, a deranged and masochistic villain, and more in a story that's rife with intrigue. All this unfolds in cutscenes that sometimes go on for more than 30 minutes at a time, so thankfully you can pause them. Unfortunately, you can't turn off the subtitles, even though the cutscenes feature full speech. Its strong cast of characters is one of the best things about Xenosaga. Shion is pretty straightforward as a heroine, though maybe a little ditzy for someone who's supposedly one of the best scientists in the galaxy. But some of the other main characters are really good, like Ziggurat-8 (later just Ziggy), a melancholy cyborg mercenary who seeks only to rid himself of the last remnants of his humanity by systematically replacing his remaining biological parts with machinery. He seems to get a new lease on life when he meets MOMO and becomes like a father figure to her. MOMO looks and acts like a young girl, but is actually a realian--a manufactured humanoid like Blade Runner's replicants, only with mysterious and highly sought-after powers. Then there's chaos, an enigmatic but kind young man who appears to be an angel. And there's also the one who calls himself Junior, who is seemingly a young boy with a penchant for action movies, but is also the captain of an immensely powerful starship. Some of the other characters you'll run across during the course of Xenosaga may not play major roles, but are still well defined and memorable. Despite the amount of time you'll spend with all these characters, Xenosaga isn't very heavy on character development, but its cast is endearing nevertheless. Read more Less
