Synopsis: X (2000)
Synopis: The story takes place in 1999, the Year of Destiny, and the beginning of the end of the world. The future of the universe rests on one young man, Kamui Shiro, who must destroy either the Dragons of Earth or the Dragons of Heaven - two opposing armies. He alone must decide whether humanity should be destroyed to create a purified universe, or whether it should be protected to preserve civilization. Two oracles, the sisters Hinoto and Kanoe foresee the coming of the Dragons and predict opposite outcomes. Each sister gathers strength and ammunition to insure her own vision for the future. However, neither sister realizes that there is one man who has an even greater power than the Dragons, and that ultimately he will determine the fate of the earth. Which sister will prevail and how does Kamui fit into their struggle? The answer to this question will forever affect humanity.Features: X (2000)

The bastardization of a great manga

Might want to
, August 30, 2002Reviewer: Andrew M - See all Andrew M's reviewsSeriously, I don't care if you've read 100 good reviews about this appaling crap heap of a movie, they're probably all hired by Manga to steal your money or your underpants or something like that. This movie is violent, which to me is bad enough (the first scene involves a heartwarming scene where Kamui's mother pulls a sword out of her abdomen, that by some trick that only Einstein can explain, mysteriously kills her), but that's not enough. Oh no, my friends, this is one of those psychological films. Pretty much, that means that it's best enjoyed high listening to Pink Floyd or Ricky Martin. For those of you who love violence in small proportions, you will be eternally joyed to know that there are a bunch of crackhead scenes which make virtually no sense (even at the end) and are just ways of exploring Kamui's inner world. Trust me when I say that, the 27 times or so these scenes appeared throughout this epic, there are STILL things man just shouldn't know. This is a joke to anything animated, and to anyone living or dead. The animation's good, but what does that matter? I mean, dirty water can be free of dysentery, but that sure doesn't mean I'm going to take a big tasty swig. Just avoid this one, already! ...

It is impossible to take an extremely long (and very good) manga and compress it into a 100 minute movie. It just can't be done.
This compression leads into issues with pacing. Rintaro does a HORRIBLE job with pacing this title. Every 5 minutes someone would say "The End of the World is Near", or something along those lines, as if we don't get the point.
It also doesn't help that there's absolutely no room for introduction for these characters. Characters sporadically appear, then die 5 minutes later. I suppose they think that the capsule introduction they have at the very beginning of the movie is enough to satisfy the viewers. It doesn't even come close. Explaining the aspects of each character's personality leaves no room for thought. Everything about is told to you in plain English!
If you watch anime for animation and artwork, X will be fine. Otherwise, stick to the EXCELLENT TV series and its manga. ...
