    Absolutely Amazing

By Jeff  Jun 3, 2005 | 7 out of 8 found this X&Y review helpful

    Pros: Music, lyrics, mood, everything...

    Cons: None

This is by far the best Coldplay album to date and possibly the best album I've heard in recent years. There is really no way to describe the album unless you hear it for yourself. It has the signature Coldplay sound but a new depth and a bit of ...an edge that the past two albums only showed bits of. There is more guitar (and great guitar at that), more addicting hooks and a feel that makes you lose yourself while listening. X & Y is everything that was great about Parachutes and A Rush of Blood put together plus even more. My favorite tracks so far include: White Shadows, Fix You, Talk, The Hardest Part annnnnnd really all of them... Read more Less

    Coldplay are back!

By MSM  Jun 13, 2005 | 2 out of 2 found this X&Y review helpful

Pros: The lyrics are deep and meaningful, definite progression but still good old coldplay sound

    Cons: Not long enough

Coldplay has definately progressed with its intelligent lyrics and layered, captivating music. The band put much thought into this masterpiece. Track-by-Track SQUARE ONE-A powerful anthem with great guitar and drum playing with powerful yet simplisti...c lyrics like, "You just want people listening to what you say," WHAT IF-A well thought out song about doubt and questioning life. Lyrics include, "What if you should decide you don't want me by your side?" Good song with again, good instrumentals. WHITE SHADOWS-A good song that is easy listening to and easy to lose yourself in. If you want to forget where you are and how long you've been there, or just hear a very good song, this is it. FIX YOU-Easily one of the best on the album. It's a song that can be interpreted as a person who wants to help someone, or a someone who wants to help you personally. It is very personal and emotional, a great song. Lyrics include, "When tears go streaming down your face, and you lose something you cannot replace," TALK-A great song about needing help in this confusing world, and wanting someone to talk to. Simple, yet layered and very enjoyable. X&Y-This is yet another one of the best songs on the album. Great melody and vocals, which include, "Diving off the deep end, and you become my best friend, I want to love you but I don't know if I can." SPEED OF SOUND-Most people know this. The link between old and new. A great song; great lyrics and great melody. "Birds go flying at the speed of sound, flying from the underground. And birds go flying at the speed of sound, if you could see it then you'd understand." A MESSAGE-Another beaitful and great song. The lyrics are soothing and comfortable. The music is acoustic driven. "My song is love," a great line. LOW-A great song of feelings. The music is great and the lyrics great. "All you ever wanted to be, living in perfect symatry." THE HARDEST PART-This song is amazing. It shows honesty and other human emotions. The lyrics and music is great. "The hardest part was letting go, not taking part. Yeah, you really broke my heart." SWALLOWED IN THE SEA-A touching sound that shows fault and blame. The music and lyrics are perfectly combined. "You cut me down a tree, and brought it back to me." TWISTED LOGIC-Eerie and beautiful at the same time. Radioheadish sounding, but still very unique and creative. The lyrics are some of the best on the album. Slightly political and modern day fears and concerns. "Created, drilled, and invaded. If somebody made it, then someone will mess it up. You are not wrong to ask who does this belong to. It belongs to all of us." HIDDEN TRACK-till kingdom come-A countryish love song that is one of the best songs on the album. The acoustic is perfectly in tuned with the lyrics. The lyrics are great too. "Steal my heart," Overall an amazing album, enjoy! Read more Less

    Sounds mature; best yet

    By __A_YAHOO_USER__  Jun 30, 2005 | 1 out of 1 found this X&Y review helpful

Pros: No holes in any track-- great balance, production, composition

Cons: Best U2 album in years!

Bottom line here: Every single track proves worthy of listening, there are no holes, there is no filler. First radio single "Speed of Sound" is only a tasty sample of X&Y (and may very well not even be the BEST track). There is a good ratio... of song tempo in this collection as well. Of course, parallels drawn of U2 are obvious in the sound of 'The Edge' guitar and Coldplay's bass most often sounds like "Variations on New Year's Day", which is hard to ignore. But it hardly spoils Chris Martin's cool voice, the beautiful melodies, chord progressions, production, and lyrics. Read more Less

    A New Direction

By WillC  Jun 23, 2005 | 1 out of 1 found this X&Y review helpful

    Pros: "Big", Bold New Sound

Cons: Isn't the Coldplay we're used to

Well, here it is. After months and months of hype, X&Y has hit shelves everywhere. I rushed out to buy it the day it was released. As I put the album in my car CD player... I was surprised. From the moment the album's first song, "Square On...e", begins to play, one thing is obvious: this isn't our old Coldplay. As the big drum crashes and echoes of guitars dies down from Square One, you realize that the comparison between U2 and Coldplay has never been more clear. Songs like "Square One", "Talk", and "White Shadows" are meant to be heard in amphitheatres and stadiums, much like U2's music. Unfortunately, this takes the band in a brand new direction. I say "unfortunately"
, only because it wasn't what I had expected. With the exception of songs like "What If", Coldplay departs from the slow ballads from "A Rush of Blood" such as "The Scientist", "A Rush of Blood to the Head", and "Amsterdam". "Rush of Blood"s main strength was how unique Coldplay was from all other bands at the time. In short, "X&Y" is certainly not a bad album. It is, in fact, pretty damn good. But if you're looking for the unhindered emotion and sheer simplicity of the other albums, don't expect much. Overall, it's a four-star album.

    Coldplay

By KHOA PHAM  Nov 3, 2006

Pros: The same, yet different. Better. More Mature.

    Cons: None

I had high expectations for this album, after Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head how could you not, and I was thrilled that it lived up to each and every one of them. It's so rare that a person will enjoy EVERY track on an album, and when... that happened with the prior two by Coldplay, I knew they were something special. Well, they did it again. I hear a lot of the influences mentioned by the band themselves, as well as other reviewers and music critics, but I also hear some Beatles particularly with the harmonization on Fix You and the ending of What If. Chris Martin's voice really is like another instrument. It's absolutely haunting and beautiful. He, Will, Guy and Jonny are amazing musicians -- the whole is so much more than the sum of its parts. They said they were striving to be the world's best band, and whether they meant it or not, they are well on their way. I can't wait to see them in concert. Until then, we have to make do with the Live 2003 CD and DVD, whatever clips can be dug up on the internet (AOL has a great amount of videos and live sets), and the repeats of their MTV and VH-1 Storyteller specials. This is an album for everyone. I haven't been obsessed like this in years. I love it!!!!! ... Read more Less

A rush of inspiration to the head

    By Nubian ∑agle ©™  Oct 16, 2006

Pros: Worthy third album that rivals its predecessor

Cons: Stays true to the formula of "A Rush of Blood to the Head"

Thanks to the relentless punch of the publicity machine, we all know that Coldplay now has a new album, and as it happens, "X & Y" turns out to be a good one. It's been a wild ride for the English band. Since their 2002 "A Rush of ...Blood to the Head," Coldplay have turned into international superstars, often inviting comparisons to U2 (and the comparisons are fairly accurate, as far as this reviewer is concerned) and developing a diverse mix of fans. Coldplay's latest album treads familiar ground, with a few welcome surprises and more of the same brand of sweeping rock listeners have come to expect. A moody piano, a subtle string section, and Chris Martin's earnest voice highlight the ballad "What If," while "White Shadows" is a mellow rocker whose guitar recalls the Edge from U2. But the song that almost made my jaw drop is "Talk," which steals the hook from "Computer Love" by Kraftwerk (I am not kidding). Coldplay influenced by the German synth quartet? Yes, it's true. The rest of the album follows a similar pattern: big sweeping melodies, choruses that soar kite-high, and no real duds. While "X & Y" was just as big a multiplatinum seller as its predecessor, it also proved that Coldplay is more than "That British Band Whose Lead Singer Married That Hollywood Actress." By Joshua  May 24, 2006

    Pros: amazing lyrics, good beats

    Cons: correct track order?

The CD X&Y is a masterpiece of music. This is so much better then the first two CD's which I both loved. The album takes you on a journey that justs makes you to reach out to other people no matter what they have done to you. The songs are writte...n so well and so in tune with people's problems that everyone deals with that you may find yourself crying from time to time. However thetrack order could have been changed to put the hard rocking tracks up front like "Sqaure One, Talk, Speed of Sound, White Shadows, X&Y, and Low", these would have been my X tracks in order. My Y tracks would have been Y1- "The Hardest Part", Y2-"What If" Y3-"Swallowed in the Sea" Y4-"Twisted Logic" Y5-"The Message" and finally "Fix You". "Fix You" is the best and most moving track on the album as it's slow start makes you want to cry, then it erupts like a volcono into the highest of highs before setting down to it's start of making you cry after jumping up and down. Overall, the CD is one of the best to come out in a long time and for a while. Read more Less

    Pros: Great Listening, intriging

Cons: Too different from previous cds

This cd is not coldplays' best cd, it is a good cd however. This cd isnt the old coldplay and it doesn't have the same melody that the old ones do which keeps us all asking for more. But if your a big coldplay fan youll like it.
