Pros: Great depth in characters
Cons: missing accuracy of period
This was a great movie in it's own rite but Tombstone was more realistic in that the characters were humanized and the details were more accurate. Although, I love this movie for the depth of the characters.
In Tombstone:
To reference "Huckleberry". I wondered if Doc really meant "I'm your Huckleberry" as in [Tom sawyer and Huckleberry Finn] because Mark Twain was a popular author during the time of the Historical shoot out. I looked them up, the shoot out was Oct. 21, 1881 and Mark Twain published the first of several Tom Sawyer books starting in 1876, so Tom and Huck were well known by then. Because Doc was an avid reader, I would think he used "Huckleberry" from the books, meaning I'm your guy, I'm the one that fills the bill. (Although Mark Twain' character was probably named after the term hucklebearer).
As far as being a "daisy" when Doc said "You're no Daisy, you're no Daisy at'all". I think he meant, "You're not the big deal you thought you were, I beat you". A Daisy was a flower that was used a lot because it was sturdy and lasted long in a vase and a person who was a Daisy would be "steadfast" or "sure" or would have been a "done deal" as the expression in the South was used.
Val Kilmer did a great job on the Gentile South (Ga, Kentucky, etc) southern accent. Very Human portrayals by all the actors.
Pros: Very good acting performances
Cons: Uneven
I thought the movie itself was just about average, but my girlfriend and I sat in the back and pretty much kissed through all of it. So as far as I'm concerned: this is The Greatest Movie Ever Made!
Pros: Dennis Quaid
Cons: a bit long
This great Western has finally gotten it's release on DVD. It's always been compared with TOMBSTONE and now You can see for Yourself in the deluxe 2 disc set.Dennis Quaid puts in one of His finest performances as Doc Holiday. Gene Hackman & Michael Madsen also shine here.
Really a mismatch...this is like Godzilla vs. the Teli-tubbies.
Wyatt Earp: Characters who are made real by actual depth AND truness to reality.
Tombstone: Fake characters who react like they are fake (Wyatt here is fearless taking strangers guns out of their hands and beating them with it....then acting like a chicken when Ringo challenges him).
Wyatt Earp: Better surrounding story: EXTERMELY well done.
Tombstone: Weak Over-Hollywood dialogue & scenarios (The Play scene was reallly goofy- cowboys shooting up the theatre & at the actors...NO ONE CARED!!! Don't know about you, but I wouldn't have kept acting or watching the play if people were shooting around me. Ringo-Love the actor, performance good, but damn what was that stuff...not afraid of Earp at all, scared poopless of Holliday...why??? Earp and Holliday were both good, and Holliday has no real reputation as being tougher than Wyatt Earp.
Characters: Earp & Holliday, & The Mastersons.
Wyatt Earp:
Earp porttrayed as he really was: Calm Fearless, demanding.
Holliday also: Quaid researched Holliday...and played him as he was...a VERY interesting man who should be played correctly.
Mastersons- we see who they are, and their motivations.
Tombstone:
Earp: played wrong - over-emotional, and
written wrong...a coward when faced with a true challenge (uh no, he was NOT afraid of
Ringo just because he loooked like the guy who took on a Terminator).
Holliday: say what you wanteveryone seems to like Kilmer over Quaid- Quaid played THE MAN...Kilmer played...I don't know, but he wasn't playing Doc Holliday...and his performace lacked all the "dying mans fearlessness" that explained why Holliday truly was dangerous... yeah he was still dying, but he just didn't act like a real person would react to it...Quaid did.
Mastersons: were they IN this movie...I don't know all the supporting cast was so sketchily presented, they were...well...completely forgettable.
Finally was it me or did that actor (forget his name) in Tombstone who palyed the baddie w/ the red shirt just RUIN every scene he was in...seeeme like a drunk actor not buying into the part...sort of like if Nick Nolte had played Han Solo...
And the SHOWDOWN...The showdown...
Wyatt Earp- THis movie shows him fearlessly going after his brothers killers - and somehow NOT GETTING SHOT...and this IS TRUE-Earp was in a lot of gunfights, but was NEVER SHOT! Neat.
Tombstone- Was that Gunfight between Ringo and Holliday a joke, or was that actually supposed to be cool...that had to be the worst & goofiest fight in any modern western...Ringo shot in the head still trying to shoot Holliday whil Kilemr...er holliday mocked him...just the icing on the cheesiness cake.
...I could go on, but why bother....tombstone was just a weaker movie, not as well written, not as realistic, not as historically accurate, and just skipped over important stuff just to get to the kung-fu...er... gunfights...
Result EASY: Wyatt Earp= Great, Tombstone= fair at best (but as Tombstone's fans say, at leats its short). So if you have the attention span of a 7 year old, watch Tombstone...if you like a great MOVIE to go along with some great fighting, watch WYATT EARP!
tombstone is totaly way better, more action to, this is another waste of my life time
this movie suck 4 hour's and still suck. tombstone is better way better
God, I love the wild west! And this movie just
adds on more to the soul. Definitely, more detailed
than Tombstone but entertaing as well.
If you love
Costner in Dances With Wolves, this movie is a
"must-see", then.
This movie is one of the best westerns I have ever seen. This version is FAR more acurate than "Tombstone". As for Val Kilmer's portrail of Doc Holiday. Val is an excelent actor but, he does not do the real Doc justice. Doc was not a big man he was sickly especialy at the time of the shootout at the OK Corral. Teburculosis had withered the man. Definetly makes the old Colt sales pitch true, "God made all man. Sam Colt made them equal"
After watching Wyatt Earp (took me three
times
before I could actually SIT ALL THE WAY THROUGH IT), I
honestly think that Tombstone is better... why you
ask?
Wyatt Earp, from what I understand, is a
tad more
accurate than Tombstone... (since it is 3 hours long, it
has time to add more stuff) but Tombstone is A LOT
more interesting, and the people that were cast to
play the characters were better in the parts... it got
your attention, unlike Wyatt Earp... I think
that
if you haven't seen Tombstone, that
you should,
because it WILL win you over! Beside, Val Kilmer is Doc
Holliday
and is MUCH sexier in the part.... you'll be a fan of
Tombstone over Wyatt
Earp in no time! AND THAT'S A GOOD
THING
BECAUSE WYATT EARP SUCKED! :)
This movie Kicks!!! It is the best!
Costner does another long western epic, doing justice to the life of the great Wyatt Earp. I enjoyed the movie immensely, as Costner scripts out the earlier life of the Western Town Tamer, showing the audience a glimpse of the dark shadows which guided Earp's passions for law and justice -- No matter how quick and deadly. Costner easily out-duels Kurt Russell(Tombstone)as Earp in a more believeable tale of western law enforcement. An outstanding supporting cast led by Dennis Quaid as Doc Holliday ( Better than Val Kilmer) lends consistency in acting and storytelling to an outstanding effort in this movie. Not necessarily a must see, but a definite gotta have in your Western Movie collection.
